Mega is a prefix in the SI system of units denoting 1 000 000. "M" is the common abbreviation for mega. One megatonne (a unit often used in measuring the power of nuclear weapons) is thus 1000000 tons.


Note that in computer science mega can sometimes stand for 1048576 (220), not 1000000, especially when used in conjunction with the byte.
