"...Ready for It?"
Song

"...Ready for It?"[a] is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for her sixth studio album, Reputation. It is the first promotional single of the album, released by Big Machine on September 3, 2017. The track has received positive reviews by critics, who cited it as an improvement on Swift's previous single, "Look What You Made Me Do". Commercially, "...Ready for It?" has reached the top 5 in Australia and United States, top 10 in Hungary, New Zealand, Scotland and the United Kingdom, as well as the top 20 in Canada and Ireland.

Release

Swift had first teased a portion of the single on September 2, 2017, during ABC's Saturday Night Football broadcast of the Florida State vs. Alabama game.[5] The same day, she announced it would be included on her upcoming album Reputation and confirmed its release as a promotional single.[4][6] It was made available for digital download as part of the pre-order of the album on September 3, 2017.[7]

Composition

"...Ready for It?" is a "pop-oriented",[8] "electronic-inspired"[9] electropop[10] and industrial pop song,[10][11] with elements of tropical house[12], dubstep[13], and trap music.[14] The song features deep synths, a bass drop,[1] drum machines and rapping.[10][15] The atmosphere of the song drew comparisons to Rihanna[16][17] and Kanye West's 2013 album Yeezus.[10][11][16][18] The song is performed in the key of E minor with a tempo of 80 beats per minute, with Swift's vocals spanning from F3 to E5.[19]

The song lyrically revolves around Swift's fantasies about an individual who she describes as a "killer" one who has had multiple relationships and is "younger than her exes" but "acts like such a man". These fantasies include "holding him for ransom", committing a robbery together, and "mov[ing] to an island". Swift also addresses the perception of her own romantic history and references the relationship between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.[3][8][13][20] The subject of the song was rumored to be Tom Hiddleston,[11] Joe Alwyn[2][21] or Harry Styles.[2][22]

Critical reception

"...Ready for It?" received positive reviews by critics, many of them cited it as an improvement over Swift's previous single, "Look What You Made Me Do".[12][13][15] Tom Breihan of Stereogum said the songwriters "made something ungainly and goofy, something that was probably a terrible idea, and they still made it sound like towering, colossal pop music".[13] Patrick Ryan of USA Today expressed some scepticism concerning Swift's rapping, but noted the contrast between the "anthemic chorus" and "dark", intense verses made for a "promising second glance on her reputation era".[15] Richard He wrote for Billboard that "Swift has never sung more expressively, nor sounded more in tune with the way modern pop production uses the voice as an instrument" and that the song's chorus has "one of the prettiest melodies of her career".[17]

Craig Jenkins of Vulture gave it a lukewarm review, stating that the song "doesn't reinvent pop or Taylor, but it does get her name out on a product built to keep pace with current trends".[12] Mike Wass for Idolator dismissed the song as "not good" and called it "equally underwhelming" as "Look What You Made Me Do". He concluded by saying "If you can get past the cringeworthy lyrics and jarring production, a cute chorus awaits. But that's a lot of work for a minor payoff".[23]

Commercial performance

In the United States, the song debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Swift's 22nd top 10 song on the chart. It also became her 13th number one song on the Digital Songs chart with opening sales of 135,000 copies, entered the Streaming Songs chart with 19 million streams in its first week of availability, and opened at 35 on the Pop Songs chart with a radio audience of 13 million.[24] As of September 14, 2017, the song sold 174,000 copies in the United States.[25]
