The decade of 2000-2009, unlike the decades from the 1920s to the 1990s, which are called "The Twenties", "The Thirties", "the Forties" and so on, the decade of 2000-2009 has no name because people aren't sure what to call it. [1]

Why the problem started

While the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s for example had a universal name due to the last numbers being the name whereas the current decade 2000s does not.

To make the problem more problematic, the celebrations of 1999 celebrated the new millennium and century, which didn't technically start until 2001, ignoring the fact that 2000 also meant the end of the 1990s[clarification needed].

To some people[who?], the 2000s is not a decade the same way the decades of the 20th century were - it's just a part of the 21st century, and the years after the 1990s[clarification needed].

Not only English-speaking countries have this 2000s name problem. For example, in Bulgaria the decade is usually called The first few years from the 21st century or simpler The beginning of the 21st century (Bulgarian: Първите години на 21 век and Началото на 21 век), whether the 1990s are called The 90's (Bulgarian: 90-те) or the 90's from 20th century (Bulgarian: 90-те години на 20 век). The same scheme is applied to the 1980s, 1970s and previous decades. The name problem also exist in other Slavic languages like Russian and Serbian.

Suggested names and their pros and cons

Determining a name for the decade has been problematic, especially in the United States. In 1999, anticipating the upcoming awkwardness, a U.S. group calling itself "Project Naughtie" ran a viral campaign in an attempt to popularize "the Naughties" as the decade's name.[2] The term involves a clear play on words, stemming both from the idea that naught means "nothing" or "zero" and the fact that naughties sounds both like nineties and naughty. A limited number of the media have made some use of the term as well, including the BBC (although adopting a more traditional spelling based upon nought).[3][4] Both spellings have gained some currency among the legitimate press in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, but there still remains no consensus on what term to use. Even the decades' trend tracking VH-1 has opted to not take any sides, calling their new show on the decade, "I Love the New Millennium".[5]

Writers have also proposed "The Zeroes" and "The Single Digits" as possible names. [6]

A 2010 Conclusion?

The 2000s' identity as a decade may lie in how strongly the 2010 New Year markets the fact 2010 starts a new decade.[citation needed] If the year is pronounced "twenty-ten" and not "two-thousand ten", the term "Two Thousands" may come to be understood only as the decade of 2000 to 2009.
