2024

The 2024–25 Philippines Football League will be the seventh season of the Philippines Football League (PFL), the professional football league of the Philippines. Ten teams are set to participate for this season which is scheduled to begin on September 28, 2024. Kaya–Iloilo are the defending champions.[1]

Format changes

[edit]

After the record number of teams that participated in the previous season, the PFL decided to reduce the number of teams in the league to 10. The top 10 teams from the previous season were planned to be kept, with the bottom 5 participating in a planned second division.

The league would shift once more to an inter-year format, reverting to a double round-robin that would see the teams play each other once in the latter months of 2024, with the second round being played in early 2025, for a minimum of 18 matches per team. The season would also see the return of the "Finals Series" that was previously implemented in the 2017 season, with the top four qualifying for a knockout round series that would culminate in a final, the winner of whom would be crowned PFL Champions.

However, unlike the 2017 season, the country's participants for the 2025–26 AFC Champions League Two would be decided based on their position at the end of the league format, rather than their placements in the Finals Series.

Teams

[edit]

The PFL had planned for the top ten teams of the previous season to participate for the 2024–25 season.[2][better source needed] The bottom five teams, Don Bosco Garelli, Manila Montet, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Army, and Tuloy would not participate in the season. However, months before the season began, United City begged off, citing financial issues that would see the club prioritize its youth academy in Central Luzon.[3] The league announced the roster of teams in early September, also announcing the return of a PFF Development Team, similar to the previous Azkals Development Team that had participated in the PFL from 2020 to 2023.

Stadiums

[edit]

For the first half of the season, matches would be held in the same manner as the 2024 season, held in a centralized venue at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. The stadium was initially planned to undergo renovation at the end of 2024, but plans were shelved until early 2025. Due to this, matches in the second half of the season are currently planned to be held in alternative venues such as the University of Makati Stadium of Davao Aguilas, the Biñan Football Stadium of Stallion Laguna, and the UP Diliman Football Field located in the University of the Philippines Diliman.
