The Hugh Owen Medal is a research excellence medal[1] awarded annually by the Learned Society of Wales, the national academy of Wales, and is named in honour of Sir Hugh Owen (1804-1881), a pioneer of higher education in Wales.
The medal is awarded in recognition of significant contributions to educational research, or the application of research to produce significant innovations in education policy and/or professional educational practice in Wales.
The award is supported by the Welsh Government[2] and Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament),[3] and fulfils the Society’s strategic objective of recognising and celebrating international excellence in scholarly disciplines connected to Wales.[4]

- 2022: David James (Cardiff University) for his work on educational research and capacity development[6]
- 2021: EJ Renold (Cardiff University) for their work on gender and sexuality education[7]
- 2020: Sally Power (Cardiff University) for her outstanding educational research[8]
- 2019: Enlli Thomas (Bangor University) in recognition of her expertise on the Welsh language, bilingualism, and studies into teaching, learning and using Welsh[9]
