Summary

Description
English: Babylon's world map, shown in side view. The ‘Bitter’ Salt Sea 'Tiamat', which flows around the earth's hemispheres like a belt, is indicated here by the green areas, Noah's island of Dilmun in the east. This and other details, such as the tunnel of the sun god Shamash, Siduri's pub and the underworld ‘Irkalla’, are taken from the epic Gilgamesh. The cosmic freshwater ocean ‘Abzu’, in which the god Enlil created air and earth, is a central element of Sumerian cosmogony.
