Summary

Description

When I moved to Portland, Oregon in 1989, one of the railroad highlights of the area was the daily run of Burlington Northern's 663 train over Cornelius Pass. This train connected BN's yard in Vancouver, Washington with operations on the former Oregon Electric. Several timber trestles made the line over Cornelius Pass a treat for the railfan.

Train speeds over Cornelius Pass were such that an intrepid photographer could get one good shot on each side of the summit. This massive structure near Bowers Junction spanning Holcomb Creek was the belle of the ball. Although the scene is rural, downtown Portland is only about ten miles away as the crow files.

The motive power on this train is a dead giveaway that it is a Sunday evening. That GP9 tucked in behind the road power will probably be set out at Beaverton for local service during the week. Once the train has passed, the Helvetia Tavern is just a mile away - serving some of the best hamburgers in the Portland metro area.

Trains still cross this bridge today, but they are operated by successor Portland & Western.
