DescriptionFly (Diptera) laying her eggs at the partially open mouth of a very recently deceased chipmunk, seen here lying on its back.jpg
English: Female flies lay their eggs in moist locations appropriate for their eggs to turn into larvae, and for those larvae to grow and develop. The eggs, which look a bit like rice grains, will develop into maggots, which can feed on the protein-rich flesh of the chipmunk before pupating. Image captured in a garden in Boston, MA. Chipmunk had been recently killed and then abandoned by a cat that was let out of the house to play. After I saw that flies were arriving, I sat in the garden next to the chipmunk (with my camera in hand) and watched the spectacle.
