St. Quiricus ("St. Cyr")
Francesco Laurana, (c. 1430 – before 12 March 1502)
The Getty Center, Los Angeles, California
The palm branch refers to the boy's martyrdom. The tub in which the sculptor has him half immersed may be due to a confusion with St. Cyriacus, an adult who was martyred during the persecution of 304 and had been known for ministering to the slaves in the Baths of Diocletian. A church in Rome was later dedicated to the adult saint as St. Cyriacus in Thermis ("Saint Cyriacus in the Baths").
