DescriptionHans Holbein the Younger - Margaret, Marchioness of Dorset RL 12209.jpg
English: Portrait of Margaret, Marchioness of Dorset. Black and coloured chalks, pen and Indian ink, metalpoint, on pink-primed paper, 33.3 × 23.8 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle. The drawing has been almost entirely ruined by rubbing, damage during transfer to panel, and reworking by other hands. The foundation drawing is virtually erased, but traces of left-handed shading in the headdress identify it as originally a Holbein (Parker, p. 43).
The sitter was once misidentified as Frances Grey, Marchioness of Dorset, the mother of Lady Jane Grey. In fact she is Frances Grey's mother-in-law, Margaret Grey, née Wotton, the second wife of Thomas Grey, 2nd Marquess of Dorset, whom she married in 1509. She died in 1535 (Parker, p. 43).
