Object history

Provenance:

  • A.S. Rambo, art dealer in Paris, offered for sale as part of a private collection of 30 paintings in 1910.
  • Belle Skinner, Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in Paris during summer 1911.
  • Given by members of the Skinner/Kilborne family to the Yale University Collection of Musical Instruments in 1959
  • Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, acquired 1960.
Exhibition history
  • Mozart Museum, Salzburg, Austria, July 23 to October 28, 1910, in connection with the Mozart Festival. 4326 visitors. Reported in Austrian and German newspapers and journals, during and after the exhibition, as a portrait of Mozart. (However, the identification of the sitter as Mozart has never been confirmed and should be treated with scepticism.)
Inscriptions Signed at middle right, on proper left shoulder: ”BJG”.
