Le dieu Ganesh ou Ganesha entouré de Gana(s), les serviteurs de Shiva


Les grands temples vivants de la dynastie des Chola, classés sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, datent des XIe et XIIe siècles, ce sont : le temple de Brihadisvara de Thanjavur, le temple de Brihadisvara de Gangaikondacholisvaram et le temple d’Airavatesvara (Airavateshwara) de Darasuram. Ils sont situés dans l'Etat du Tamil Nadu en Inde du sud.

Ces temples, caractéristiques de l'art dravidien médiéval tardif, témoignent des brillantes réalisations de l’ère Chola en architecture, peinture, sculpture et statuaire en bronze.

Le temple de Brihadishwara et la cité religieuse qui l'entoure ont été construits sous le règne de Rajaraja Ier (985-1014) qui a fondé l'empire Chola.
