Nach den ersten beiden Serien von Hochzeitsbildnissen aus den Jahren 1525 und 1526 (FR 187/188 und 189/190) entstand 1528 und 1529 eine weitere Folge in mehr repräsentativer Auffassung (FR 313/314). Martin Luther trägt dabei in der Regel ein Barett, Katharina die Haube der Ehefrau. Weshalb bei dem Gothaer Bildnispaar Katharina barhäuptig erscheint, ist bisher nicht geklärt worden. Das Bilderpaar in Hannover (FR 312/313) wird hier als Schlüsselbilder angesehen.
