Description

Description: The Kirkland Iron Works was located on the shores of Lake Kirkland. The steel mill was closed by the recession of 1893, ruining Peter Kirk's dream of building the Pittsburgh of the west.  A dock for unloading coal and iron ore is visible at right. Railroad ties can be seen in the foreground. The success of the venture depended on King County coal and the development of iron mines at Snoqualmie Pass.
