Karoga apraksts
„Karogs ir taisnstūra formas audums ar platuma un augstuma attiecību 1:2. Karoga svītru attiecība ir 3:1:3. Baltā svītra karogā simbolizē ceļu. Ceļš iet pa vidu dzeltenajam rudzu laukam, kurā, kā rudzupuķes zieds, uzplaucis Smiltenes novads. Karoga vidū abās pusēs attēlots krāsains Smiltenes novada ģerbonis, kurš platumā ir 1/3 no karoga platuma. Ģerbonis ar rudzupuķi ir Smiltenes novada simbols, kurā katra ziedlapa apzīmē 8 pagastus un Smilteni.“

2012. gada 28.jūnijā Smiltenes novada domes sēdē ar vienprātīgu deputātu balsojumu, ņemot vērā iedzīvotāju balsojuma rezultātus, apstiprināts Smiltenes novada karoga mets. Dzeltenās krāsas laukums simbolizē fizisku spēku, pieredzi, intelektu un zināšanas. Baltā krāsa karogā simbolizē mieru, drošību, ticību un kārtību, kas ir piemērota vide, lai tajā attīstītos, augtu un pilnveidotos.

Jāpiebilst, ka dzeltenā krāsa ir arī Smiltenes pilsētas karoga krāsa, tādā veidā novada karogā tiek ietverta arī pilsētas identitāte. Smiltenes novada karoga meta autore ir vietējā māksliniece un Smiltenes novada ģerboņa idejas autore Ginta Špate.[1]
