Description
English: The Topkapı Palace Plan, with detailed legend, of the palace's Second, Third and Fourth Courtyards, and Fifth Outer Places. The Topkapı Palace structures and gardens are located in southeastern Istanbul in western Turkey, on the the Golden Horn at Seraglio Point, overlooking the Sea of Marmara and the Bosporus.
PLAN ORIENTATION
  • The main axis is from south (left page-side) to north (right page-side). The outermost First Courtyard starts the axis at the south—(left side), with each increasingly private and successive courtyard leading northwards—(towards right).

  • Outer Palace and Fifth Courtyard areas:
  • Former gardens, extending eastward to the wall along the Sea of Marmara - (B.)

  • C. Fifth Courtyard or Fifth Place, of the former walled-private royal Outer Palace grounds, is now part of Gülhane Park, extending north to the Golden Horn at Seraglio Point.
  • D. Former western gardens between 'C' and 'E' now part of Gülhane Park (parts extend west to the railroad yards).
  • E. Garden level southwest of and below First and Second Courtyards, on which the 'Tiled Kiosk' (Sırça Köşk)—present day Museum of Islamic Art, the Basketmakers' Kiosk, and other structures-museums are located within Gülhane Park.
