File talk:Clive Lindsay and the original Calvine UFO Photograph.jpg
Why I believe the file is not replaceable
[edit]This image is not replaceable by a non-free image because no equivalent non-free images are available.
This image documents a historic event in the Calvine UFO story - It is the first time Lindsay publicly shared the Calvine photograph after keeping it secret for more than 32 years.
It is the combination of these three elements - Lindsay, with the only original Calvine image, at the point in time at which he first revealed it to the world - that make this image irreplacable.
The image is not being used to simply show Lindsay, nor to show the Calvine image - it is being used to show the moment in time at which he first revealed the photograph along with his testimony which propelled this story into the media. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drewphotoboy (talk • contribs) 21:27, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
As such it is key to the Calvine story - until this point no photograph of the sighting was available, all were believed lost and no witness statements were available. The story existed as a rumour supported by two very poor quality, blurred photocopies and a few redacted MOD documents. The publication of this photograph and Lindsays account of how he came to have it and his eyewitness testimony of the interview he undertook with one of the original witnesses, is what has brought this story to the attention of an international audience - as such this image is essential and irreplicable.
Whilst it is possible there may be a free image of Mr Craig Lindsay available online there is no non-free image of Lindsay WITH his copy of the Calvine photograph available, and that is what is needed here to properly convey the story. The photograph Lindsay is holding has now been donated to a University archive which means that further photographs showing both Mr Craig Lindsay and the original print are not possible.
Only two known photographs of Lindsay with the original Calvine image exist and both were taken by Mr David Clarke who owns the copyright. The images were published by Clarke on his Website and Blog and whilst they may have been used without permission and without proper credit by some people online, he has not and is not willing to provide these images copyright free.
Clarke is however willing to give permission for THIS image to be used here on Wikipedia if correctly credited - I have an email from him stating this – nevertheless I believe given the historic importance of this image to the Calvine story and given the lack of a free replacement the case for fair use is convincing.
