This photograph was probably one of a group taken in New York by Napoleon Sarony in January 1882. According to Richard Ellman (in Oscar Wilde, Knopf, NY, 1988, p. 168-9), Sarony took some 20 different shots, of which 7 are reproduced by Ellman. The photos feature Wilde in several different costumes, some "aesthetic," but also a couple of shots in modified evening dress. The hair length and style, Wilde's age, all appear to be roughly the same as in the Sarony photographs.
