Giambattista "Nino" Cescutti (13 June 1939 – 20 October 2023) was an Italian professional basketball player and head coach.
Life and career
[edit]Born in Udine, Cescutti started playing basketball in the Società Ginnastica Triestina team before moving to Simmenthal Milano, with whom he won the Scudetto in 1959.[1] After three years with Victoria Pesaro, with whom he won the title as Serie A top scorer twice, he moved to Ignis Varese, with whom he won the 1964 Scudetto, the 1966 FIBA Intercontinental Cup and the 1967 FIBA Saporta Cup.[1][2] He also played 30 matches with the Italian national team, taking part in 1963 FIBA World Championship and in EuroBasket 1963 and 1965.[1]
After his retirement, Cescutti worked as a physical education teacher, and occasionally served as head coach, notably winning a Swiss Basketball League and a Swiss Cup with SP Federale Lugano, and getting a Serie A promotion with Associazione Pallacanestro Udinese.[1][2] Hit by a car while walking in his hometown, he died on 20 October 2023, at the age of 84.[2]
