The Novo mesto Gymnasium is a state school for both boys and girls, founded in 1746 by the Empress Maria Theresa and initially run by Franciscan monks. In 1870 the school became a state school and the present school building at 9 Seidlova Street was built in 1912.

It is located in Novo mesto in the region of Dolenjska (Lower Carniola), approximately 60 km (37 miles) South-East of Ljubljana.

The current headmistress, Natalija Petakovič, is the fourth woman in this post in the history of the Novo mesto Gymnasium. The school, the second-oldest in Slovenia, is the largest of the four gymnasia in Novo mesto. It has a long list of distinguished former students, among them many famous scientists and artists.

The school charges no fee to its students.

Overview
Presently about 900 students between the ages of 15 and 19 are enrolled in the school (roughly 220 in each generation).

The school is supervised by the school board, comprising three teachers, three parents and three representatives of the founder (the government). The members of the school board are appointed by the teaching staff, parents’ board and the founder respectively. The school board appoints the headmaster after consulting the former boards.

Almost all of the students, after passing their Matura, go on to different Slovenian universities.

History
The Novo mesto Gymnasium is the second-oldest educational institution in Slovenia that has been in operation continually since its foundation.
It was founded by Empress Maria Theresa in 1746. The school was first run by the Franciscans and the lessons started November 3rd in 1746. The list of the first 66 students finishes off by a comment by the first dean Father Geodefredus Pfeifer, who wrote down: The Novo mesto studies have begun with this small and modest flock.
Being an educational and cultural institution, the Novo mesto Gymnasium has played a significant role in the cultural, scientific, economic and political life of the Slovenians. The school has educated several scientists, artists and economists, for instance: Boris Andrejčič, Slavko Grum, Božidar Jakac, Miran Jarc, Dragotin Kette, Marjan Kozina, Vladimir Lamut, Pino Mlakar, Marjan Mušič, Josip Plemelj, Anton Podbevšek, Leon Štukelj, Ivan Tavčar, Oton Župančič, …
In 1870 the school became a state school and the present school building on Seidlova ulica (Seidl Street) was built in 1912. It was characterized by both world wars and consequently by the changes in the political system. Also, it was subject to different school reforms. In 1848 the duration of the schooling was lengthened from 6 years to 8 years.
Due to a new school reform in the 1980's (Slovenian: usmerjeno izobraževanje) the name ‘gymnasium’ was banned supposedly because of its elitist connotations and it came to be called Natural Science and Technical School (Slovenian: Naravoslovno-matematična srednja šola). It was soon evident that only a gymnasium can provide the needed broad knowledge and built-up skills that are essential for successful studies at University. As a result there was a new school reform in 1990 and the school became a gymnasium again.
Renovation work on the school building, which lasted 2 years, began with the celebration of its 250th anniversary in 1996. Better working conditions in the renovated school and modern classrooms meant an additional impetus for even better and more laborious work. In 2006 all of the school’s 27 classrooms were equipped with computers and digital projectors, which makes it one of the two such equipped schools in Slovenia

Programmes
The Gymnasium has four different programmes. In every generation the school has one sport class, one classical class, one Matura course class, and 5-6 general gymnasium classes.

General gymnasium
This programme of the general gymnasium aims to give the students a broad education and erudition needed for university studies. It further develops the education and skills gained in primary school.

All general gymnasium classes have the same core curriculum in the first two years, but in the third and fourth years the students choose a set of electives according to their preferences. Thus in one or two classes most students pick natural science oriented electives whereas in the other classes they select subjects that cater for students with an interest in the social sciences.

Sports class
The first sports class was introduced in the school year 1999/2000. The curriculum of the sport class contains all subjects of the general gymnasium curriculum combined with supplementary sport lessons.

There are 18-22 students in each sport gymnasium generation, which entails higher quality of pedagogical work and a more relaxed atmosphere in the class. Students can have extra tutorial lessons for additional explanation, testing and assessment of their work. Also, once a year a summer camp is organised where the students get acquainted with the sports that are not in the school curriculum.

After they have accomplished their Matura, the students of sport classes can continue their studies at any university programme.

Classical Gymnasium
The classical Gymnasium class was reopened (after a century-long cessation) in 2003. Currently the school has four classical gymnasium generations, one class in each.

The classical classes are similar in size to those of the general gymnasium but with a rather different curriculum. It contains most of the subjects of the general gymnasium curriculum. However, the core curriculum contains Classical Latin, which no other programme has. Apart from Latin it also has extra lessons in the humanities and foreign languages – history, philosophy, Spanish, Russian, etc – and fewer science lessons (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). If the students choose to take any of the science subjects in their Matura, they get extra lessons in their 4th year.

Student conduct
At the end of the school year, students may get certain awards for good work. if, for instance, he/she has excellent grades or has helped his/her schoolmates a lot, the student’s homeroom teacher may give him/her a commendation. For excellent work in the field of sport, art or science they may get an award from the headmistress or from the teachers’ board

Sanctions are ranked. For smaller offences the student gets a caution, for heavy violations they get reprimands of different levels, and if they continue breaking the rules they can be expelled.

Sanctions are valid for one year, except expulsion which is valid until the end of the current school year or in some cases even longer. The teaching staff can nullify the sanction if the student’s behaviour has improved.
