The Kahyaoğlu massacre (Turkish: Kahyaoğlu Katliamı) or the Kahyaoğlu Tragedy (Turkish: Kahyaoğlu Faciası), was a massacre in which an estimated 200 Turkish civilians were killed by Armenians in the Yeşiloba district of Adana on 22 June 1920.[1]

Massacre

[edit]

During the Kaç Kaç incident, a group of over 150 Turks trying to escape from Adana to the Taurus Mountains was stopped by Armenians between Karaisalı and Belemedik. The captured civilians were taken to the Kahyaoğlu Farm, where a separate group of a few dozen Turkish civilians already were. Women and children were separated from men. Once everyone's hands had been tied, they were shot to death. Some victims were killed with bayonets, and most of the women were raped during the massacre.[2] The massacre came to a standstill when the Armenians fled from the scene after hearing gunfire, thinking that Turkish soldiers had come after them.[3]

Death toll

[edit]

The bodies of 64 people (41 men and 23 women) were identified. Although it has been determined that children were also subjected to the massacre, their number is unknown because their bodies were dismembered. It is estimated that the number of massacred civilians, including those who were dismembered, is around 200. 4 men and 18 women survived with injuries.[2]

Legacy

[edit]

The name of Kahyaoğlu Farm was changed to Şehitlik (Martyrdom) in memory of the massacre and a museum named Yeşiloba Martyrdom was opened at the location.[4]
