Born
NationalityAmerican
Known forClimate change denial, running the blog Climate Depot

Marc Morano is the owner and founder of the website Climate Depot, a project of the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow.

Biography

He was born in Washington, DC and grew up in McLean, Virginia. He has a bachelor's degree from George Mason University in political science.[1]

Career

He is a former employee of Jim Inhofe. While working for Inhofe, he served as his director of communications beginning in June 2006. As communications director for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee under the Bush administration, he designed the EPW press blog, which won a Golden Mouse Award in 2007.[2] His career began working for Rush Limbaugh from 1992 to 1996, during which time he was often known as "Limbaugh's man in Washington".[1] After 1996, he began working for Cybercast News Service, where he was the first to publish articles accusing John Kerry of exaggerating his military service record.[3] In addition, Morano has worked for Howard Phillips, Paul Weyrich[4] and American Investigator. He produced a minority report in 2007 entitled, "Over 400 Prominent Scientists Disputed Man-Made Global Warming Claims in 2007."

He followed this up a year later with a report of over 650 scientists, including many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN IPCC. In this US Senate Document the scientists provided statements that supported global warming was not caused by human activity and directly disputed the evidence provided by the UN IPCC. This figure has since been updated to "over 700."[5] Critics of this list charge that it includes a significant number of people who are not sufficiently well-qualified to assess climate science, such as author Ray Kurzweil and a number of TV meteorologists, such as Steve Baskerville, as well as scientists whose expertise is in geomagnetism.[6] In 2009, Joseph J. Romm wrote that Morano was "unquotable and uncitable," adding "Besides his penchant for smear, he just makes stuff up..."[7]

In November 2009, Morano was one of the first to break the Climategate story after being contacted by Anthony Watts. The story was subsequently picked up by James Delingpole.[8]

On December 4, 2012, Morano debated Bill Nye on the topic of global warming on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight.[9] At the end of 2012 Media Matters for America named Morano the "Climate Change Misinformer of the Year."[10]

Funding

The website Climate Depot run by Morano is funded by right-wing billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife,[11] known for his financial support of conservative public policy organizations.
