MediaWiki talk:Protectedinterface
MediaWiki:Protectedinterface is shown when attempting to create or edit a MediaWiki page with no such permission. The content depends on whether an administrator is permitted to create the page. MediaWiki:Editinginterface is a related message, providing the default editnotice when editing a MediaWiki page which doesn't exist (as long as no specific editnotice has been created), provided the administrator, interface administrator, or interface editor has the permission to create the page. This interface message or skin may also be documented on MediaWiki.org or translatewiki.net. The page forms part of the MediaWiki interface, and can only be edited by administrators and interface editors. To request a change to the page, add {{edit fully-protected}} to this page, followed by a description of your request. Consider announcing discussions you add here at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) to bring more people to the discussion. |

I suggest to use the same text as on {{interface explanation}}, i.e. change the text "This interface message is documented on its manual page" to "This interface message or skin may be documented on MediaWiki.org or TranslateWiki." Or at least include a link to the qqq. Thank you, SPQRobin (talk) 12:30, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

At the moment, I think the text emphasizes the wrong thing in a confusing way. The current bolded title is not the primary message. Instead, what the page is should be emphasized. Therefore, the main part of the text should be changed to:
- This interface message or skin forms part of the MediaWiki interface. It may be documented on MediaWiki.org or translatewiki.net. It can only be edited by administrators and interface editors; you can submit an edit request by clicking the button below and following the instructions.

If a non-admin attempts to move a page into the MediaWiki space, he/she will get an error along with this interface message. The issue is that the move action is performed on a special page that does not have a talkPageTitle, and hence is currently giving:
- Lua error in Module:Submit_an_edit_request at line 62: attempt to index field 'talkPageTitle' (a nil value).
A namespace check (if we're on a Special page) solves the problem. Please replace this section of text:
You can submit an edit request by clicking the button below and following the instructions. <div class="center" style="margin-top: 4px;">{{Submit an edit request|type=full}}</div>
with
{{#ifexpr:{{NAMESPACENUMBER}} < 0||You can submit an edit request by clicking the button below and following the instructions. <div class="center" style="margin-top: 4px;">{{Submit an edit request|type=full}}</div>}}
I've tested that the Lua error correctly goes away at the test site.

The sentence, "It can only be edited by administrators and interface editors", should not have a semicolon (;). I consider this a typo. Please replace it with a period (.) instead. 2600:1700:A2A0:FB50:19C9:6F10:7AE2:5AEF (talk) 01:57, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
Interface editor vs interface administrator
[edit]Templates {{Interface explanation}} and {{Protected interface}} currently link to the page on Meta: interface editors. On Wikipedia, there is a user group interface administrators, which, if I understand correctly, can edit the same pages, which "Global interface editors" can. Should the templates link to one of these or to both? —andrybak (talk) 11:52, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- Interface editors is a correct link to meta. Interface administrators might also be correct, but the interface admin group on en is a subset of the administrator group in the context of most MediaWiki pages, so adding them is unnecessary. (Obvious, excepting those which are CSS or JS pages.) --Izno (talk) 14:57, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- Izno, ahh I see. This bit of Wikipedia:Interface administrators is relevant:
Per community discussions, interface admin rights may be granted only to existing administrators.[1][2]

- Make the parameter
1
display the stringedit
by default if it is unspecified, instead of the current behaviour (showing a raw {{1}}).
Currently, this template has a very unsightly {{1}} appearing in the 3rd sentence of the message ('Only administrators and interface editors can {{{1}}} it.') when parameter 1
is unspecified, as can be seen on the example of this template on the actual page for this template (Template:Protected interface). Fixing this problem would save you some effort in the long run (not needing to manually assign a value to 1
in order for this template to look presentable), and I'm also not entirely sure if there are any use cases for this template where 1
would have a value besides edit
in the first place. 🔥HOTm̵̟͆e̷̜̓s̵̼̊s̸̜̃🔥 (talk) 16:45, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
- This template is only used on a few pages in the MediaWiki namespace [4]:
- Where MediaWiki replaces the $1 placeholder with actual value for the parameter. This change is not needed, because this template is not supposed to be used anywhere else.
{{{1}}}
is not "unsightly", it highlights the fact the this parameter is required. The usages of this template must supply the correct value to this parameter through MediaWiki placeholders. I oppose this change. —andrybak (talk) 14:15, 26 August 2022 (UTC) - Not done this does not appear to be causing any actual issues anywhere. — xaosflux Talk 18:48, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
