Marta Zauniūtė
Marta (Morta, Martha[1]) Zauniūtė (March 22, 1875 – 1945) was a Lithuanian culture activist in Lithuania Minor associated with Lithuanian book smuggling, press worker, and bibliographer.[2][3]
Marta Zauniūtė was born at the Rokaičiai farmstead (German: An Rokaiten[a][5]), Lithuania Minor (in Kreis Niederung (renamed into de:Landkreis Elchniederung in 1939) of East Prussia) to a family of Dovas Zaunius (senior). Marta finished a secondary school in Tilsit. Although she never had a chance to continue her education, she played an important role in the Lithuanian culture.[3]
She died in East Prussia during World War II in 1945 under unknown circumstances.[6]
Family
[edit]Dovas Zaunius had nine children (three sons (Andrius, Dovas (junior), Hermanis) and six daughters (Anna, Marė, Marta, Berta, Ema, Augustė).[7]
- Youngest son Dovas Zaunius (1892–1940) was a diplomat and Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs (1929–1934)
- Daughter Augustė Zauniūtė (1890–1950) was one of the first women medical doctors and had a practice in Memel (now Klaipėda)[8]
