Afghanistan

[edit]

I have reverted this edit, which seems to be trying to add info that might be useful to readers, but, IMHO, presents the info unclearly. I suspect that Afghanistan as visualiz3ed by the editor who added this info is not the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and that "never" in the added info is not based at the 1919 date of acquisition of sovereignty stated by the article. If something to this effect is to be included, it needs to be stated more clearly. It would probably also be better located in the Notes section of the article. Philippines

[edit]

In this edit I have made some significant changes relating to the Philippines centering around the question of whether or not the First Philippine Republic was a decolonized, sovereign, independent country. My understanding is that it was not. One of those changes placed a {{discuss}} tag at the entry for the Philippines in the Timeline table, Philippine revolutionaries declared independence in 1898 but did not achieve it. By my understanding, Emilio Aguinaldo was not the head of the government of a sovereign independent state. I'm not sure what it ought to say about the Philippines, but what it currently says is, at best, incomplete. This table and other tables in this article seem to have problems beyond this and I'll probably elaborate on that in a separate talk page section. (added) I;ve changed the table heading for this column to read, "Independence declared and/or achieved." Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 14:52, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(added) Having seen no discussion, I've updated this entry in the Timeline table. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 07:33, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bold reformatting

[edit]

Having a section headed Asia in an article titled Decolonisation of Asia bothered me, so Ihave WP:BOLDly combined the Asia and Individual countries sections into a single section headed Individual countries. I'm not really happy with the result, though I do think it is an improvement. Revert or improve further as appropriate. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 06:15, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DTS problems in tables

[edit]

Looking at the Timeline section, I wondered, "timeline of what?". When I tried sorting the table there by the column containing dates, I got confusing results.

I see that the table in the section I've recently re-headed as Individual countries uses the {{Date table sorting}} template (aka {{dts}}) but that tables in other sections do not, and their columns containing dates do not sort usefully. Before {{dts}} template invocatioons can usefully be added to at least some of the dates involved, it looks like some rowspan and colspan details need to be added in at least the timeline table and possibly in other tables as well. I don't presently have the time available to try to fix this. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill)

(added) You can see on the article page that I'm editing the Timeline table as I get time, but I have a lot of stuff happening outside of WP and I may not be able to finish that quickly, if at all. I could really use the help of another editor -- one who is more comfortable with wikitable semantics involving rowspan than I am. NOTE: In editing the Timeline table, I've just noticed something in the following row:

 Malaysia  Malaya
Colony of North Borneo
Colony of Sarawak
 British Empire 31 August 1957
16 September 1963
Tuanku Abdul Rahman Malayan Emergency

Looking at relevant historical details, I conclude that those two dates are a pair of from-to dates, not separate dates of decolonisation events. However, my editing here is intended simply to do what is needed to make the table sort usefully by date, not to look into what individual dates might signify, and I'm pretty sure that I've encountered similar situations in parts of the table I've already edited without noticing them. What I am going to do is to continue treating the dates individually unless there is clear indication in the table that they ought to be treated otherwise. I think I am done with this series of edits to the Timeline table. The table still has problems as I have noted above and in a footnote I have added to the article. I have not looked at whether or not other tables in this article have similar problems. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 02:34, 1 January 2024 (UTC) (added) I had left this with the East Timor table section not done. I went back and did that section. My edits here were pretty WP:BOLD, and should be checked by so,eone more familiar with the relevant history than I am. Feel free to inprove as needed.
