Could someone who knows please add a pronuciation? Mahalo. W Nowicki (talk) 03:58, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Apostrophe?
[edit]What's with the apostrophe in the state name? As discussed ad naseum, the island officially has an ʻokina, but the convention elsewhere on wikipedia was to omit it from the state name. W Nowicki (talk) 18:14, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

- Support. Our main article on the state is Hawaii. The Star Advertiser, the state's top newspaper, spells it "Hawaii" and uses the word in pretty much every article they publish. Merriam Webster gives "Hawaii" both on their Web site and in their Geographical Dictionary. So does Britannica, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. At the bottom of the state's main Web site, it says, "© 2011 Hawaii Tourism Authority". The site for the court system says, "© 2008 Hawaii State Judiciary." - Support. And while we're at it, we should address these too.-Travis Thurston+ 19:29, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

- Lets not. Some of these like Pa'ao, which is really Paʻao, have the okina instead of an apostrophe. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:13, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- Support per WP:UE (use English) and WP:UCN (use common names). More generally, there is the issue of the widespread use of placenames with ʻokinas and macrons in Hawaii-related articles that does not reflect common, English usage. Guidelines such as WP:HIMOS should be consistent with policies such as WP:UCN (use common names). — AjaxSmack 04:41, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
