Wikify tag per Skomorokh

[edit]

Hello Skomorokh, nice to cross paths with you. I see that you added a "wikify" tag while stating: "list itself needs extensive wikification using cite templates". Although I recognize and agree that the list could use some inter-wiki'n, I have a question and concern about the cite templates. My concern is that I believe the list is much more helpful if the book title is listed first before the author (since it is indeed a list of books). I understand that this is not usually how references are cited, however in this case as a book list, I believe that it would be easier for someone coming to search for a particular text, film, novel, cd, article etc. Most of the time a novice searcher will know a book title, before knowing a specific authors name. Do you agree, disagree? Furthermore, do you know if there a way to use the cite template and have the book title listed first? Thanks :o)   Redthoreau (talk)RT 04:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao, Redthoreau. The list as it stands, though impressive in scope, is not compliant with Wikipedia house style. The bolding, ad hoc citation and punctuation style and goofy images are some issues that need addressing. Check out WP:CITE#HOW, MOS:TEXT for the specifics. Cite templates are helpful but at the moment are incompatible with leading with the book title as far as I know; if you want to stick to that order, it seems to me to be within editorial discretion (though idiosyncratic). Regards, Skomorokh 04:56, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Skomorokh, I appreciate the suggestions. I am usually the only editor working on the list and thus appreciate the view from another set of eyes. In reference to "editorial discretion" what matters do you believe would be a judgment call, as opposed to a discriminate violation break with MOS, and thus in need of revision? I have a rationale for all of the current issues you mention above - (The bolding is because the smaller font is easier to read if bolded, with the font made smaller as to make the book title [larger], the main purpose, more easily stand out to the reader) - (The ad hoc refs are done that way to prevent having a ref list for a list article, something I usually haven't seen) - (The "goofy" images used in a similar way that images would be included for any article, and as a means of identification, to eliminate the look of a potentially drab list). I am willing to adjust any of the aforementioned issues, per your suggestions. What is your view on these? Which are most egregious in your view? + Please feel free to adjust any of these you believe could be improved.   Redthoreau (talk)RT 05:13, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The order of information I think is within editorial discretion – your point that a list of works has different requirements than a reference section is well-made. But in terms of punctuation and what information is included, the list ought to follow the lead of the established style guidelines (e.g. Harvard, APA, Chicago). External links ("jumps") in the body of the article are generally to be avoided, with the exception of ASIN/OCLC/ISSN-type links and links to a full copyright-compliant version of the work; so the Google Video links are generally fine, while the links to "official websites" belong in an External links section if at all. Skomorokh, Thank you for your impressive additions, and willingness to address my questions. I have a few more, if you don't mind. What would be your view on having a ref list section, and moving the links there? My concern is that your average reader may not realize that the refs are indeed "clickable" links to watch the previews, films, articles etc and not just referential support. Do you have any list articles that you would recommend I consult or preview? What other issues do you believe need to be fixed on the article? Ideally, I would like to have the article in the appropriate shape to remove the wikify tag you placed. Thanks   Redthoreau (talk)RT 06:18, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine with removing the tag; there are still outstanding issues, but no moreso than most lists. Direct links to full versions of works are typically embedded in the name of the work; i.e "Lastname, Firstname. Book Name (Year). Location: Publisher. ISBN"; the blue text make it obvious that the title is clickable. References should go in a ref list section, yes. I recommend you check out any featured list bibliographies. Las Manos de Guevara (The Hands of Che Guevara)

[edit]

Hi, I have recently added Las Manos de Guevara but I cannot find an ISBN for this book. Is there a way to find out. Thanks, Expressway232 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Expressway232 (talkcontribs) 05:17, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
