Waldorf School location

[edit]

The school is in the middle of Te Manatu in an area known collectively as Rototuna, so why move information about it to Huntington, which is another census area? Johnragla (talk) 02:58, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At the time I moved it, I was planning to use the three statistical areas of Te Manatu, St James and Huntington all as a single suburb. Then I found there was already an article on St James Park, and Te Manatu didn't look to be significant enough for its own article. If you think Te Manatu would be more appropriately combined with Rototuna, I'm happy to do that, but the table for individual statistical areas in this article will need to be updated to include that area, and it's wide enough already with three areas. There's no hard and fast rules about suburb boundaries, so I'm using the statistical areas and also looking at Fire and Emergency localities as an alternative interpretation.-gadfium 04:37, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Seems odd to show the Christian School in Rototuna, but not the Waldorf School, which is closer to the centre of Rototuna. Ashmore lies between Rototuna and the Christian School. Johnragla (talk) 05:32, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The Christian School is closer to the centre of Rototuna than Rototuna High School, and slightly closer than Te Totara Primary. Ashmore doesn't appear on Google Maps or Open Street View, so I wonder if the proposed suburb didn't happen. The 2010 Hamilton City Council map doesn't include Rototuna. As I said above, I have no problem with including Te Manatu in Rototuna, but we will have to either expand or scrap the table of individual statistical areas in this article.-gadfium 05:55, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree Ashmore doesn't exist, but I'm not sure how much residents identify with the other Rototuna suburbs either. That's why my preference is to lump them all together as Rototuna, which is often used to describe them. Johnragla (talk) 06:06, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I accept your points, and have moved Te Manatu to be part of this article rather than St James Park, and have moved the Waldorf school paragraph back here. I've modified my demographics script to add a table of individual statistical areas whenever it is combining two or more areas. This partly replaces the table you had, but doesn't include the historical data. If you think the previous table should be kept, I'm happy to restore it, but I'll leave it to you to add the extra information for Te Manatu.-gadfium 03:22, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to see more historical population figures, rather than less, as they give an indication of when an area changed. I'll add them back in to the articles they've been taken out of when I've time to find more old stats. Johnragla (talk) 04:34, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've put that table back.-gadfium 04:39, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Census area names

[edit]

It seems from the census map that St James and Te Manatu are east of Rototuna, whilst Huntington is south east. Why not show that? Johnragla (talk) 03:24, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake. Feel free to adjust the surrounding areas for any of these articles. I think you know the area much better than I do. It's many decades ago that I lived in Hamilton, and it's changed beyond recognition.-gadfium 04:37, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I can't tell the difference between the Rototuna suburbs and don't live there either. It seemed to me that, as they're all often collectively called Rototuna, it made more sense to put all the information on one page, rather than create information for each of the 2018 census areas (Te Manatu still missing an article). A couple of years ago I raised a question about what to do with Hamilton suburbs. Maybe we wait to see if locals think there's any significant distinction between parts of Rototuna? Johnragla (talk) 04:46, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnragla: I don't see Te Manatu appearing as a suburb on Google Maps, or Open Streetview, or the Fire & Emergency map I linked to in the section above. I don't think it is worth the effort to create an article for it at this point, but I'll revisit that decision if anyone else weighs in, or when I come to work on the 2023 census results, as the whole northern part of Hamilton is growing so rapidly. As I said in the section above, I made a judgement call to combine it with St James Park rather than with Rototuna, and it's easy to change that apart from having to add to the tables you created for the three areas of Rototuna.
Please ping me when you reply on other talk pages. I have this one watchlisted, but I don't watchlist every article I edit.-gadfium 05:05, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Te Manatu isn't a name I've known before. There's a park and a road with the name. Countdown in the area is called Rototuna and real estate ads sometimes use Rototuna or Huntington. I expect Rototuna will gradually be used for all these suburbs, but I may be wrong. Johnragla (talk) 07:26, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
