Short description

[edit]

Following up from discussion here with @Pbsouthwood, I'd like to add the short description "Wikipedia editor" to non-subpage user pages that have this template and don't have a different short description defined. Sandbox is Special:Diff/1052160383. Are there any concerns, or shall I implement? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:37, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:40, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

For some reason, this template's currently coded so that one can't show both the Wikipedia logo on the left and the Wikimedia logo on the right. Can someone please fix that? -- PK2 (talk) 09:03, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not done this ER isn't ready to go, feel free to mock up in Template:User page/sandbox , test, then reactivate. — xaosflux Talk 11:06, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I added 2 after logo, and right with yes in the imageright parameter, and I also added -en after File:Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg in the image parameter. Someone must have coded that particular part of this template incorrectly. -- PK2 (talk) 01:00, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done; another test case has been added. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 06:36, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To editor PK2: wouldn't say that the template had been coded "incorrectly". Before your edit, the template had been coded so that users could choose one of the two images to display. Your edit makes it possible for users to make both images appear. That's an "added feature" rather than a correction. The |logo=right has been restored so as not to break existing usages. Please remove the extra line break this template now forces before it on user talk pages after recent edits (not sure exactly which one caused the change); see my talk page for an example. The exact change to be made doesn't really matter, as long as the line break is removed. Modernponderer (talk) 19:30, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Done I don't see a line break on my browser, but hopefully that is fixed for you now? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:54, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Turning off short description

[edit]

@Fayenatic london: I don't understand your recent edit — adding a short description to user pages was exactly the point, and it's been working successfully for months until you just turned it off. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 13:51, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It does not seem helpful for this template to put user pages into Category:User pages with short description, which is currently under discussion at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2022 August 1#Category:User pages with short description.
I thought it would be more useful to categorise just the user sandboxes that are draft articles (where the user had copied {{short description}} from another page), excluding the main user pages.
How is the short description "Wikipedia editor" accessed or otherwise useful on a user page which transcludes this page header template? – Fayenatic London 16:28, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fayenatic london, the purpose of short descriptions is outlined at WP:SHORTDESC — namely, it's to aid in search results. For instance, in the screenshot, my bot has a short description, which could potentially help novice editors better understand what it is, but my user page no longer does. I don't have any strong opinion about the category, other than that maintenance categories should serve our editing needs, not vice versa; the short description should be kept on its own merits rather than because it populates/depopulates some category. Are we good to cross back over to the right side of Chesterson's fence? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 02:01, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining where you have seen it – I'd never seen that, as shortdesc is visible mainly in mobile view, and I use desktop mode rather than mobile. But if someone searches without typing "User:", then user pages will not come up in the search results; and if someone is typing "User:" then they already know they are searching for Wikipedia editors. And then, this standard short desc does not discriminate between search results e.g. by stating nationality, time zone or language. So what is the use of transcluding a short description via this template? – Fayenatic London 08:39, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fayenatic london, the screenshot above is desktop (albeit New Vector), not mobile. On usefulness, you're right that the description isn't going to do much in most cases, but there's a small chance it'll help out someone, such as a newcomer who doesn't know that user = editor for this purpose (more newcomers than you might think), and that can be weighed against virtually zero downside. Overall, it just helps make the library of short descriptions more complete, which is something we should want if we've committed to it as a system. On making the description more specific by adding something like nationality, we could perhaps tackle that in an automated way in the future, but for now, because the noreplace parameter is used, if you add a more specific short description to your user page, that'll override the one this template generates.
Given all that, I'm going to restore the functionality per BRD; if you have any other questions or thoughts, feel free to lmk and happy to discuss. Best, {{u|Sdkb}}talk 00:32, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template Use

[edit]

How would one implement this/a template into their article or user page? Thanks so much! -J47k J47k (talk) 15:18, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@J47k: You don't put it in articles. It is only for use in user space (not necessarily on user pages), and the usage is given at Template:User page#Usage. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:16, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request for dark mode compatibility

[edit]
Kindly merge changes in Template:User page/sandbox for dark mode compat. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 12:07, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Done Sohom (talk) 04:23, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've reverted this because it wasn't displaying as centered on userpages. Could this new color palette perhaps be included in an optional parameter? ⇌ Jake Wartenberg 17:43, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed the issue and reapplied the change. Sohom (talk) 18:05, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the documentation to reflect the new default values for the "border-c" and "background" parameters. Just out of curiosity, why was it necessary to change the colors for compatibility with dark mode? ⇌ Jake Wartenberg 18:21, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jake Wartenberg It's recommended per mw:Recommendations_for_night_mode_compatibility_on_Wikimedia_wikis to make the template play nice in vector22's dark mode (in some cases templates can be completely unreadable in the new dark mode if these styles are not applied.
That being said, can you post a screenshot of the difference in color scheme you are seeing, this should have caused a major difference in visual appearance outside of vector22 and dark mode. Sohom (talk) 18:46, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if it's a major difference, but you can compare the original and current appearance of the template on my userpage. ⇌ Jake Wartenberg 19:00, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I took a look and made some changes, it should now display in the old color scheme for non v22 users. Sohom (talk) 13:08, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to be working! I took a shot at updating the documentation after your previous edit. You may wish to do so again now that the color is different depending on the skin being used. ⇌ Jake Wartenberg 16:15, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
