User:Oiyarbepsy/Species abbreviation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The template {{Species abbreviation}} was taken to Templates for discussion with a consensus to delete at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2015 April 27#Template:Species abbreviation.

There were many problems with the template, including the fact that it generated species names but didn't show the genus, and it provided no description for what the species might be. Most importantly, though, most of the entries it generated didn't belong on the disambiguation pages anyway. All of them were partial title matches and there is consensus that such entries have no place in disambiguation pages.

There are three possible actions to take for such pages:

Valid disambiguation

[edit]

If the page will still have at least two entries after the template is removed, it is a valid disambiguation page. Removing the template is all that's required.

Suggested edit summary when removing this template:

  • Removing inappropriate species entries. See [[User:Oiyarbepsy/Species abbreviation]]

Redirect to page listed on disambiguation page

[edit]

If the page will have only one valid entry after removing the template, it should be a redirect. Convert to a redirect to that remaining entry.

Suggested edit summary when converting to a redirect

  • Redirecting to only remaining valid entry. See [[User:Oiyarbepsy/Species abbreviation]]

Title ending in (disambiguation)

[edit]

If the page title ends in (disambiguation), then once it is reduced to a single entry, and all links removed, it can be speedy deleted. In most cases, every single link will be from one of the species abbreviation disambiguation pages (eg M. armatus), where it's not needed. The template {{Db-disambig}} can be used for this.

Redirect to list article

[edit]

If there will be zero entries left after removing the template, this page should be redirected to List of Latin and Greek words commonly used in systematic names. This action was decided at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tinctoria.

Nominated for deletion

[edit]

There were nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tinctoria‎:

The rest below will be redirected per the AfD.

Unique circumstances

[edit]

These pages can not be part of a bulk action as they have unique circumstances not seen elsewhere:

  1. Amphibium - nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2015 December 12#Amphibium. This never had the template, but is a somewhat related case
  2. Macrophylla & Microphyll - Macrophylla includes content that probably belongs in an article. For microphyll, see discussion at Talk:Microphyll#Microphyll. These topics are closely related
  3. Slevini - Doesn't use template, but every single entry is redlinked, almost speedy deletable.
