The European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET) is an international society, based in Europe, and devoted to CSCW and practice-centered computing. It was founded in 2010, and its mission described as to "bring together research streams that inform the design of […] sociotechnical systems and help to understand the dynamics of adopting and using IT artifacts beyond the simple interaction with a static user interface".[1]

History[edit]

EUSSET was founded in 2010, but traces its origins to the development of the CSCW research field. In 1986 the first CSCW conference took place in USA, and three years later the first European Computer Supported Coordinated Work (ECSCW) conferemce was held. Initially it was biannual, alternating with the ACM international conference on CSCW. The Springer Computer Supported Cooperative Work: An International Journal was launched in 1992, independent from EUSSET but important for the CSCW research community.[2]

The first EUSSET Summer School took place in 2015.[3]

The EUSSET Digital Library was launched in 2016.[3]

In 2017 EUSSET partnered with the Springer CSCW journal, publishing full papers from ECSCW in the journal, and other proceedings in the EUSSET Digital Library.[4]

The ECSCW conference was a biannual conference until 2017. In 2018 it merged with the International Conference on the Design of Cooperative Systems (COOP) and became an annual conference, under the auspieces of EUSSET.[5]

Activities[edit]

The main activities are the conferences in general and the yearly ECSCW in particular. In addition to ECSCW, EUSSET also supports the biannual conference Cities and Communities (C&T, established 2003) as well as the biannual conference InfraHealth (established 2017).

EUSSET also organises the yearly EUSSET Summer School, aimed at PhD Students and focused on practice based computing.

The main services managed by EUSSET are the member hub and the EUSSET Digital Library. The Digital Library is Open Access and contains proceedings from related conferences as well as historical material.

EUSSET also manages other activities and services, such as a competence network and online academic seminars. At the ECSCW two awards are presented, one for best paper and one life-time achivement award.
