Photos

[edit]

Dwight, I wanted to thank you for all the photos you've been adding. I wanted to suggest that, as you upload your images to Commons, you might consider making sure the categories you are using are reasonably specific, and feel free to create new categories if it seems appropriate. For example, you had 8 images from around Ypsi Twp, all put in "Category:Townships in the United States". I've gone ahead and created a category for Ypsi Twp, made it a subcategory of new category Townships in Michigan, making the latter a subcategory of Townships in the United States. In addition to making things tidier on Commons, that lets us use {{Commonscat}} (see [1]) to link to that category. Thanks for the great photos, and please let me know if you have any questions! cmadler (talk) 18:57, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Creating categories is easy. It works the same on Commons and on Wikipedia, and it's basically the same as creating a new article. Really the hardest part is the first step, which is deciding whether you need a new category and if so, what it should be called. Take the case of the Ypsi Twp photos on Commons. There were enough photos (and the potential for many more) that I decided it made sense to make a category. I thought about calling it "Category:Ypsilanti Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan", which I think is how the Superior Twp category is named. But I'm fairly confident that there's only just the one Ypsilanti Township, so I decided to call it "Category:Ypsilanti Township, Michigan". Then put the first image into the category, by typing [[Category:Ypsilanti Township, Michigan]]. This will work if it's anywhere on the page, but customarily it goes at the very bottom of everything. After you save that edit, if the category doesn't yet exist you will get a red link. (If you don't get a red link, it means that category already exists -- make sure it's really want you want and not something else that shares the same name.) Click on the red link and, just as with a Wikipedia article, you will invited to create the page, which in this case is a category. For categories, just put a very brief description on it so anyone looking at it knows what it is (I usually just take the intro to the Wikipedia article on that topic) and then put it into at least one higher-level category. Sometimes you have to create a category structure as you go, as I did (rather than putting my new Category:Ypsilanti Township, Michigan right into Category:Townships in the United States, I put it into Category:Townships in Michigan, which was then also a red link and I had to in turn create that within the US category). I hope that was clear; it really is a simple process, and sometimes the simplest processes can be the hardest to explain. For more information on categories (probably more than you will ever want to know), you could consult Wikipedia:Categorization, Help:Category, and Wikipedia:FAQ/Categorization. I'm sure similar pages exist on Commons too, but again, the process is exactly the same. Let me know if that doesn't make sense or if part of what I wrote is unclear. Thanks, cmadler (talk) 19:54, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Brighton Airport article

[edit]

Thanks for contributing the Brighton Airport article. In response to your question on my personal page, WikiProject Aviation uses 6 criteria for assessment of aviation related articles. My assessment of your article is based on those criteria. I agree with you that criteria number 5 is met; the remaining ones, however, are not. If I can assist in explaining the rating criteria further, please contact me on my talk page. Cheers - Canglesea (talk) 06:42, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I'm sorry if I caused you any offence by replacing the JPG file with a PNG. Over the last couple of days I've been working through the backlog of JPG files tagged for replacing with PNG files. I looked through the Gallery of new files and saw the Altarum Institute logo and decided to re-upload it as a PNG. I meant no disrespect towards you. Hugahoody (talk) 17:45, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have no intention of plagarising any work of any other user, I am just seeking to work through the backlog of files that have been tagged to be replaced by PNG files. Since you had uploaded a JPG format image I could not upload a PNG version over it, the file had to be separate. It was also created directly from the subject's website using an edited screenshot. I'm sorry if this has caused you any offence. Hugahoody (talk) 20:11, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Move of Harbor Freight Tools picture

[edit]

The article is a business stub, and moving the picture to a more appropriate section of the page formats the article in a manner that is similar to other business stub pages i.e.:Walmart or General_Electric or Microsoft. The picture at the top of the page also shifts the entire top portion over to the right without word wrapping on larger monitors, forcing the contents box to float in the middle of the screen appearing awkward and out of place. The consistency of the formatting of the article is more important than the location of the picture

As to my association with the company, I have no association outside of being a long standing customer Fuzzywuzzy07 (talk) 15:49, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New articles

[edit]

Most projects have bots which pick up likely new articles. The aviation one is at:-

[2]

You wrote that you had assessed your own article as start class. Don't get annoyed if an editor doesn't give your articles the rating you think they deserve, everything is fluid in Wikipedia, not set in stone. Having said that, I would rate the Brighton airport article as a stub too, as there is just not enough content to justify it as start clas. Now, as you improve and add to the article it can be re-assessed, you can even ask directly for an article to be reviewed by peers who will give constructive criticism to the author rather than just editting the article.

Just add this to the main project banner on the talk page:- |peer-review=y

Many editors/authors starting on Wikipedia fell that they are being picked on. Do not despair, it is just the nature of the beast that editors will wade in and edit artivcles without the original authors permission, as they are entitled to do. If you don't like what was done converse with the editor on his talk page, but don't expect an instant answer, it may be days or weeks before the editor logs on again.

You also mentioned on my user page, (should have been on my talk page), that I had opened talk pages for some of your articles but I cannot for the life of me remember which/ Do you want me to have a look at the article sfor you, as an informal peer review? if you do just post a link on my User talk page.Petebutt (talk) 13:55, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just read your bio milestones and realized that even though I know you (or knew you) pretty well in person, there are many of your bio details I was not really familiar with. I don't believe you're still in Ypsi, where I last had contact with you, but I may be wrong. Good to see you here at least and noticing that our intellectual and political views seem to be still in sync. Hope you're doing well, and it is actually a pleasure to meet you again here. warshytalk 19:56, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I tried to send you an email from here but couldn't find the feature enabled at your user page. If you go to my User page (main one, not talk page) you'll see the option "Send email to this user." If you could send me one with your email address that would probably be the best way to re-establish a more frequent contact again, no? Good hearing from you and that you're still at the same location. warshytalk 22:03, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Timothy and Lucretia Jones Warner Homestead

[edit]

Hi Dwight ... The Warner Homestead is among the recent listings published last Friday by the NPS. Unfortunately, it's not terribly unusual for the weekly announcements to have inaccurate address information. I came up with the geocode coords by plugging the address into Google Earth. You might try contacting the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office or a local historical society (perhaps the Howell Area Historical Society?) to see if they can shed any light. --sanfranman59 (talk) 19:25, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just found a new "LOVE" button on WP (a real pink heart button!) that apparently will put it right there for you. I decided to give you one, even though you already have one like that, just to see how it works. But regardless, you really deserve as many of those as can be given to you. National Airlines HQ

[edit]

Hi! I notice you got a photo of the Kalitta HQ. Did you get a photo of the National Airlines HQ? WhisperToMe (talk) 01:44, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The National Airlines HQ offices are not photographically interesting. They are located inside a hangar building which does not lend itself to a photograph.Dwight Burdette (talk) 02:29, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about this being a few years late. Anyway, I meant for the photo to be of a utilitarian purpose even if the building isn't pretty. It's intended to show "this is what the company's headquarters looks like." WhisperToMe (talk) 16:21, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Haab's Exterior Sign.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Haab's Exterior Sign.JPG, which you've sourced to (poster). I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:13, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand why you see a copyright problem with the picture. It is not a poster. It is an historical marker in a public place. It has the emblem of the National Park Service on it. It is just ridiculous to assert that permission is needed to reproduce the historical marker. Dwight Burdette (talk) 23:24, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nightmare Cruise

[edit]

Just wondering if you happen to have any photos of the "Nightmare Cruise" from the Ypsi Heritage Festival? I've re-created the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival article and submitted it to "Did You Know?" with a proposed hook about the Nightmare Cruise, and a photo would really help it out. (Or any other Heritage Festival photos you might have could be added into the article.) Thanks, cmadler (talk) 16:04, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the Ypsi Heritage Festival. I had considered taking pictures of it this year, but since I didn't think I'd be able to use the photos, I decided against it. Dwight Burdette (talk) 16:30, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I noticed you moved the photo that I added to that page downwards. I realize that you are the author of the original photo and are invested in its placement in the article. However, I think that the one that I added more clearly shows the Enterprise location by showing the logo on the building very clearly both in the full-size photo and, more importantly to the casual reader, in the article thumbnail. I was hoping we could work together to come to some consensus about this. ♠PMC(talk) 22:04, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't at all agree that the added photo is superior. My photo shows an entire building with an entire sign with entire cars. The added photo shows part of a building, with part of a car with a sign that is partially obscured by a pole. I don't see how we can come to a consensus on this. Re: Removal of Romney grave image

[edit]

I have filed the case at Commons as you suggested. Please see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:George_and_Lenore_Romney_grave.JPG and make your case there. I hope you prevail (I've lost several of my photos due to freedom of panorama concerns, it's very frustrating), but since this came up at an FAC review I have to follow through to show good faith in the process. Wasted Time R (talk) 04:13, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies for not notifying you at the time, you are right I should have, I was in the middle of all sorts of stuff and didn't think of it. I know it's difficult to watchlist all the articles that one adds photos to, because there are many changes that have nothing to do with the photo and so you tend to stop looking. For this reason I created a tool that one can run periodically that will check a list of all the articles you have photos in and tell you if they are no longer there. If you're interested I can mail that tool to you. Wasted Time R (talk) 05:03, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Leonard Wood article

[edit]

According to WP:NOTNEWSPAPER : "News reports. Wikipedia considers the enduring notability of persons and events. While news coverage can be useful source material for encyclopedic topics, most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion. For example, routine news reporting on things like announcements, sports, or celebrities is not a sufficient basis for inclusion in the encyclopedia. While including information on recent developments is sometimes appropriate, breaking news should not be emphasized or otherwise treated differently from other information. Timely news subjects not suitable for Wikipedia may be suitable for our sister project Wikinews. See also: Wikipedia:Notability (events)."

Newt Gingrich's comments about Romney and his comparison to Leonard Wood have no enduring significance what so ever, particularly to Leonard Wood's legacy. The spike in views is temporary. That's what I originally deleted it and that's what I just deleted it again. If you want to readd it, take it to the admin.

To keep adding this quote to wikipedia in the middle of an electoral campaign is overtly political and tarnishes the already imperfect reputation of wikipedia.David Straub (talk) 23:16, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am an Army combat veteran and knew about Fort Leonard Wood because, among other things, my older brother was also an Army combat veteran and did his basic training there. I never knew for whom the Fort was named, but because of of Newt Gingrich's comment, I took the trouble to look it up, like many others. The comment has obviously had a significant impact on Leonard Wood's legacy. Whatever the merit of the comment, it had the effect of evoking the memory of Leonard Wood, and adding to his legacy. That is the point of mentioning it. Normally, I wouldn't bother to pursue this, because having a single edit undone is not that big of a deal, but I'm going to make an exception in this case, because I've been insulted by the insinuation that my addition to the article had a political motivation. I'm flabbergasted by the insinuation. To what end was my contribution serving a political purpose? I'm going to undo the deletion and you are the one who can take this to admin if you want. Dwight Burdette (talk) 23:36, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was also in the army and I did my basic at Ft. Sill. Newt Gingrich's comparison of Romney to Leonard Wood was hardly a compliment to Leonard Wood. He was saying he was one of the worst Republican nominations in the party's history, so I don't see how adding Gingrich's quote evokes the memory of Leonard Wood. If someone trashed Joshua W. Sill, I would not add the quote to his wikipedia page. And to my point, doesn't it seem like Gingrich's comments are a bit stale now weeks after the quote? But none of this matters. The quote was deleted per the above mentioned WP:NOTNEWSPAPER. Take care.David Straub (talk) 12:56, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that the quote is uncomplimentary is irrelevant. To argue otherise is counter to the neutral point of view mandate. What is relevant is that Newt Gingrich made the comment and it was widely reported. The judgment that the comment is only of transient value is highly subjective and there is no consensus for the deleting the mention;.Dwight Burdette (talk) 13:20, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Mattress World of Michigan has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

not notable

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. M-153

[edit]

See WP:BRD, which stands for Bold, Revert, Discuss. You were bold in adding the link, I reverted you. Your next move should not have been to revert my reversion; your move should have been to open a discussion on the article's talk page. In short, I don't think that the link is appropriate. Frains Lake Road isn't notable, so it doesn't warrant an article. That it connects to Frains Lake, Michigan doesn't even warrant a link from M-153's article, in my opinion. I could rewrite that sentence to eliminate the mention of the road without altering the key description of the routing of M-153. The curve in the road isn't even next to Frains Lake, nor is M-153 adjacent to the community, so if copy edited, any mention of Frains Lake would be obliviated.

The article you created is borderline on the notability question, so I'm proposing that it be merged into its township article. (See the discussion I'm opening on the issue for more details. In the future though, if you have an issue with an edit of yours that is reverted, please discuss it. Reverting the reversion is called "edit warring", and if carried to excess can subject editors to a block. Imzadi 1979  05:35, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You undid my addition of a link to the "M-153(Michigan highway)" Wikipedia article, presumably because the link is to an article about the community, not the road. The article linked to, does, in fact, discuss the road.
The purpose of a link is to provide the reader with additional information about the text being linked from. It simply can't be taken seriously to suggest that a link can only be to an article which is dedicated solely to the textual reference which is the link source. To suggest otherwise is to say that it is preferable that the reader not learn anything about Frains Lake Road than to violate an arbitrary definition of what is an appropriate link.Dwight Burdette (talk) 05:35, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I dispute the need for the link. The link implies that Frains Lake Road is notable; it is not. There is one sentence in the community article about the road; that type of context could be added directly to the M-153 ("an unpaved road") without the link. Imzadi 1979  05:42, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. if the attempt at adding the link to M-153 was to keep the Frains Lake article from being an orphan, you could have added the community to {{Washtenaw County, Michigan}}, which would have linked all of the other cities/communities/townships in the county to your newly created article. Imzadi 1979  05:45, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your response is insulting and I will not discuss this further with you. Dwight Burdette (talk) 05:53, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, as insult was not intended. I'm sorry that I pointed out the usual first method for resolving differences of opinion was breached here. It still remains my opinion though that Frains Lake Road itself doesn't need any context in the M-153. You disagree, so we'll have to resolve this disagreement, unless you're conceding the point and allowing me to re-remove the link as unnecessary. Imzadi 1979  05:58, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Transparently, an assumption of good faith requires that the burden of proof is on someone challenging a contribution. I made a good faith contribution. You have only your opinion to back up your challenge to my contribution. The mention of Frains Lake Road in an article is, ipso facto, an indication of some significance of its notability. I didn't mention it in the article. Someone else did. Your are in the ridiculous position of arguing that it is preferable to withhold, perhaps interesting, information, for the purpose of upholding an arbitrary standard of "notability." I don't know how to argue with such a position.Dwight Burdette (talk) 06:17, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I did assume good faith, but such an assumption does not require that I not disagree with the appropriateness of the link. Notability is the stock and trade of what gets included around here. That road is not notable; it would never get its own article. The community is borderline notable, and not even located on the road in question. Look, I could have tagged the community article for deletion, instead I've tried to fix it up a bit for you. I just don't agree that we need a link to it from the M-153 article. I've even reverted vandalism in the past that removed your fair-use uploads from articles, enlisted admins to help watch the situation so that the vandalism didn't remove the logo from the article for a long enough period that the logo was summarily deleted. We just disagree here on a link about a gravel road that is only mentioned because said non-notable, rural gravel road happens to be near a direction change in a state highway. I don't think the link is needed, nor useful, as it implies that there is something more to this road than its existence, and a tangential connection to a borderline notable former community. Imzadi 1979  06:44, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to see what I had in mind, I put together a sandbox of how I'd merge the three articles together. In the end, your work is preserved, the Superior Township article actually gets a bit more substantial, and it gains more than a dry recitation of geographic and demographic statistics. The sandbox is at User:Imzadi1979/Superior Township. I think only one sentence of your work is not reused at the moment, and one paragraph is noted for a possible split into another article completely. Imzadi 1979  07:33, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Dixboro article has stood for seven years without being proposed for merging with the Superior Township article. Only when I cited it as a example to justify the Frains Lake article did you propose merging it. I don't agree with what you propose and don't respect the way you have gone about doing it, but I'm not going to argue about it anymore since reason is pointless. Dwight Burdette (talk) 12:37, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Length of time isn't a reason against merging though. What is your opinion though on adding all of the relevant information to the township article so it isn't a dry recitation of geographic and demographic statistics? Imzadi 1979  21:06, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Length of time is, au contraire, absolutely relevant because the reasonable assumption has to be that that the more time has elapsed, the more likely it is that reasons for altering an article will be discovered. I think the articles should stand as is without change. If you want to create a separate article about the 'Dixboro Ghost' and pretend you discovered this Wikipedia-worthy subject, be my guest. I don't need the credit.Dwight Burdette (talk) 21:27, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Consensus by silence is the weakest form. Once challenged, it is up to the opponents of the challenge to affirmatively demonstrate that consensus still exists for their viewpoint. It doesn't matter if that challenge to the status quo comes after a day, a week or seven years. In any event, my proposed merger (have you looked at it?) retains the existing content of the three articles and produces a stronger, more vibrant end product. Anyone brought to the article on Superior Township, whether by a link directly to Superior Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan or through the redirects from Dixboro, Michigan and Frains Lake, Michigan would receive the full wealth of that information on a set of interconnected topics. The merged article wouldn't be too long, so WP:SIZE concerns wouldn't be present. It's a net positive for our readers. (And there would still be a link to your Frains Lake information in the M-153 article because that article links a couple of times directly to township article.) Imzadi 1979  22:23, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to engage in any Wikipedia policy sophistry. You have succeeded in taking this discussion to the point that it is tedious. Go ahead and make the changes you want, but I'm not going to endorse them. You availed yourself to collegiality only after your actions were challenged. If you had been collegial before taking action I might have been be more inclined to reciprocate.Dwight Burdette (talk) 22:46, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hamtramck photo request: Hamtramck Public Schools

[edit]

Dwight,

I was told you are the most active Wikipedian photographer in Metro Detroit. Do you go into Hamtramck much? If not, do you know anybody who does? I ask because a Polish editor had translated Hamtramck Public Schools and he wants photos for the article. Are you interested in photographing the district headquarters and the schools, including Hamtramck High?

Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 12:11, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wish I could help you, but Hamtramck is further away than I'm inclined to drive for a Wikipedia photo. Dwight Burdette (talk) 12:27, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Thanks anyway! Another question: Do you do Oakland County photos? WhisperToMe (talk) 16:27, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have done southwest Oakland County photos, but that was when I was willing to travel further than I am now willing to do so. I typically don't seek out Wikipedia photo opportunities anymore but will contribute if an opportunity presents itself. Unfortnately, I eventually concluded that the more you contribute to Wikipedia, the more time you have to spend fighting 'edit wars' and I just got tired of it. I still contribute photos to Wikimedia, but they aren't necessarily for a Wikipedia article. Dwight Burdette (talk) 16:41, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve.
