- 1914 – World War I: Marie-Adélaïde, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg (pictured), and Prime Minister Paul Eyschen surrendered to the invading German army and the nation remained occupied for the rest of the war.
- 1897 – The Siege of Malakand ended when a relief column was able to reach the British garrison in the Malakand region of colonial India's North West Frontier Province.
- 1923 – Calvin Coolidge became the 30th President of the United States after Warren G. Harding suffered a fatal heart attack.
- 1932 – At the California Institute of Technology, Carl David Anderson proved the existence of antimatter when he discovered the positron.
- 1947 – A British South American Airways airliner crashed into Mount Tupungato in the Argentine Andes; its wreckage was not found until 1998.
- 1985 – Delta Air Lines Flight 191 crashed in Dallas, Texas, U.S., due to a microburst, resulting in 137 deaths.
- 1990 – Iraq invaded Kuwait, overrunning the Kuwaiti military within two days, and eventually sparking the outbreak of the Gulf War seven months later.

August 2: Republic Day in North Macedonia
- 338 BC – A Macedonian army overcame the combined forces of Athens and Thebes at the Battle of Chaeronea (memorial statue pictured), securing Macedonian hegemony over the majority of Ancient Greece.
- 216 BC – Second Punic War: Outnumbered Carthaginian forces led by Hannibal defeated a Roman army, near the town of Cannae, Apulia, in southeast Italy.
- 1916 – An explosion, blamed on Austro-Hungarian saboteurs, sank the Italian dreadnought Leonardo da Vinci.
- 1939 – Leo Szilard wrote a letter, signed by Albert Einstein and addressed to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning that Germany may develop atomic bombs, leading to the U.S. establishing the Manhattan Project.
- 1989 – Sri Lankan Civil War: The Indian Peace Keeping Force began a massacre that led to the deaths of 64 minority Sri Lankan Tamil civilians over a two-day period in Valvettithurai, Sri Lanka.
