Just wanted to say "Good job". I think I have copies somewhere of the maps from Larry Lowenthal's book; I'll see if I can't knock together an upgraded map at some point. Choess 01:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I used the book extensively when designing the map, and intend to create a geographic map soon.JimIrwin 14:04, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- The map looks excellent, with one small caveat; could you add the Ferromonte Railroad? Choess 16:45, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- According to Lowenthal, the Ferromonte Railroad was never part of the CNJ High Bridge, it was always an independent line. I added it, but it is pretty small, which is why I originally left it out. On the schematic map, it doesn't belong, since it wasn't part of the CNJ system, and the schematic map is intended to only show the CNJ system. JimIrwin 17:20, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- I'm a stickler for completeness, I guess. Really nice map; thanks for making the change. Choess 18:48, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Essex County
[edit]Jim,
I am impressed at the maps you have made of the municipalities of NJ. I was wondering if you happen to have a map of Essex county with nothing highlighted. I would greatly appreciate it.
Please email me at matthew_rounds[at]cox.net when/if you read this.
Thanks!

US regional population map?
[edit]Hi Jim, you've made the best population maps I've ever seen. We also want to look at the population densities across different states. We've tried to use your individual state maps and join them together, but it proved to be difficult due to the different map ratio, orientation and so on. I wonder if you have population maps for big regions, such northeast and southeast US? Thanks! Sam. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Huangculex (talk • contribs) 20:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, each state is a different projection, so they won't tile together. The only large scale map I have is the entire U.S., so there aren't any regional maps. I'll take a look at the data I have to see how hard it would be to make some regional maps.

- The US Population map was originally on Wikipedia, but someone moved it to Commons. You can find it here. New Jersey maps being replaced by bot
[edit]A series of new maps for all places in New Jersey is being uploaded and replacing previous maps, including many that you have created. I have left a note with User:Arkyan, the creator of these maps, to express my concerns, noting that your maps provide far more details and context, among other issues. I wanted to let you know what's going on and solicit your input on this situation. Alansohn 03:12, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
License for Image:Oregon population map.png
[edit]The image Oregon population map.png is a candidate to be copied to the Wikimedia Commons. When you uploaded this image, you licensed it for use under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). On behalf of the Wikipedia and Commons communities, thank you.
You also chose a license tag which adds disclaimers to the GFDL. As explained at Wikipedia:GFDL standardization, these disclaimers cause certain re-use problems that make the GFDL less free than it could be. Before I copy this image to the Commons, I wanted to ask whether you would be willing to remove the disclaimers from your GFDL tag. No one other than you may legally alter the license. If you do choose to modify the license on this image, I respectfully recommend any of the following best-practices license tags: You are under no obligation whatsoever to alter the license. Doing so merely cooperates with those members of the community who believe that disclaimers in individual media are undesirable. Wikipedia consensus still allows GFDL licenses with disclaimers, as does the Commons. Whether or not you choose to remove the disclaimers, thank you for your consideration. This message was placed using Template:License disclaimer notice. |

Speedy deletion of Image:Oregon population map.png
[edit]A tag has been placed on Image:Oregon population map.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

[edit]I agree with your standards of inclusion. If there aren't some, everyone just ends up inserting various and sundry non-notable folks. Granted, the list is relatively small now but over time I expect we'll see more 'high profile' insertions. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 20:51, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
I'm wondering if you know how far this initially extended. A 1912 map shows unused right-of-way from the end of tracks at Hamburg Placs (on plate 51) up to Raymond Boulevard (on plate 54), but it also shows an unused bridge over the CNJ's Newark and New York Railroad. --NE2 15:55, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
- I found somewhat conflicting information. It was intended to be 3.1 miles, all the way to the Passaic (Annual statements of the railroad and canal companies of the state of New Jersey, 1890, p. 145). One source said that it was actually 1.04 miles, e.g. to Hamburg Place. Another source says that the Newark and Passaic branch extended from Oak Island yard to the center line of Plank road, but was operated only to Hamburg place. That source was "Documents of the Legislature of the State of New Jersey, 1920". Since I cannot imagine that another railroad was incorporated to extend it and then was left idle beyond Hamburg place, I assume that the Newark and Passaic was actually built to Plank road (i.e. to the Morris Canal), making it 3.4 miles, and then later used only to the coal yards at Hamburg Place.

D&H Canal Map
[edit]The Mapmaker's Barnstar | ||
For creating a long-needed map of the Delaware and Hudson Canal – Daniel Case (talk) 18:00, 24 July 2010 (UTC) |
But, I'm also wondering, can we:
- just use the top half, unless we can in the future add a sourced discussion of the M&D canal as a competitor?, and
- try to make the canal route stand out more (as it is, it's hard to distinguish the blue from the generally cool colors the map uses) and make the text larger so it's obvious what the canal is at the current resolution? (Well, I'd be willing to pump it up to 300px at max). Daniel Case (talk) 18:00, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
- I wish there were a way to use one image as a thumbnail and have it link to a larger more detailed image. Are you asking for the canal route to be more obvious on the thumbnail, or on the full image? The full image is best viewed at 1000px, by the way. Unfortunately, Wikipedia resizes everything to a rather small size on the media page, and its not always possible to produce a good, complete map at that small size. That is also a disadvantage of using SVG rather than a raster image, because although Wikipedia shrinks images to be approximately 500px, at least when you click on a raster image to get the full-size map, you get it.
- It is certainly possible to show just the canal, but the larger context is very important to the history of the canal, especially its relation to the early railroads which ultimately drove the canal out of business. I could also upload a raster image rather than an SVG, so that it can be displayed at its designed resolution.
- I created a special thumbnail image that shows the route better, and modified the link so that it displays the full-scale image. Let me know if this improves it.

- That's better. Daniel Case (talk) 15:36, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
How did you make population density maps?
[edit]Do you have a special program or something?-- Someone35 (talk) 17:14, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I had a series of custom programs that extracted Census data from the summary files. I used Manifold to combine the data with Tiger/Line data for the tracts and create the state maps, as described in User:JimIrwin/Lineage of population maps
- —Jim Irwin (talk) 18:41, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- Can you make these maps only for the US or you can make them for other countries too?-- Someone35 (talk) 07:30, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- Most other countries don't make the data freely available like the U.S. does. —Jim Irwin (talk) 10:47, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- But if I give you the data can you process it into a map? I'm not sure I'll find the data I want but I'll try-- Someone35 (talk) 12:58, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- No, I'm not interested in that. —Jim Irwin (talk) 14:40, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Updated Population Density Maps
[edit]Like many who see your maps, I'm impressed. Do you have any plans to update your population density maps with data from the 2010 census? (Mekirkpa (talk) 20:24, 1 December 2011 (UTC))

Iowa Population Density
[edit]Jim,
I am a researcher involved with ATV safety in Iowa, and was hoping to analyze whether population density affects crash factors using qGIS. You have the only updated map I could find (and a beauty at that). I was wondering if you would be able to use your pre-.png data in my analysis. Thanks much.
-Ryan (Medmanschultzy (talk) 22:50, 11 January 2012 (UTC))
- Ryan, do you want the raw data (e.g. a file containing the population density by census tract ID), or are you looking for some kind of GIS file, such as a SHP file with areas and a density attribute? I've created a SHP file for you that contains the tract areas, which you can download at Iowa_tracts_2010.zip. The attributes are from the Tiger/Line with two extra attributes: 100% population from the Census 2010 Summary File 1, and the population density that I computed, population per square mile. I hope this is helpful to you.
- —Jim Irwin (talk) 23:40, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- Jim,
- That was absolutely perfect. Thank you so much.

Railroad ton-mile formatting
[edit]Thanks for setting up the tables for the ton-mile data I added to the CNJ and LV articles. I've got a bunch more RRs to add and I'll use your setup for some of them-- we'll see if I get it right. Tim Zukas (talk) 23:44, 26 February 2012 (UTC)
- If you have a lot of them, it might be worthwhile setting up a template. That way, if someone wants to modify or improve the formatting, it can easily be done in one place. — Jim Irwin (talk) 12:18, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
U.S. Population Density Map
[edit]I've been a big fan of the population density maps, both the 2000 and the 2010 set. I was wondering if you have a larger version of US_population_map.png available that you could send me? That would be absolutely incredible Harrison du Plessis (talk) 23:14, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, no, that is the only image I have at the moment.
