Todd Martin was the defending champion, but did not participate this year.

Thomas Enqvist won the tournament, beating Magnus Gustafsson in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 6–2.[1] Enqvist became the first swedish player on winning this tournament a total of 3 times, after also winning in 1995 and 1996.[2]
