On October 20, 2024, a group of students from various colleges in Bangladesh, who had either failed or received unsatisfactory grades in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations of 2024, staged violent protests at the offices of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education. The protests turned violent, resulting in vandalism of the board's offices. Amid growing tensions, Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar, chairman of the board, submitted his resignation later to the education minister.[1][2]
History
[edit]In 20 August 2024, a group of students in Bangladesh protested the government's decision to cancel the HSC exams.[3] The cancellation was due to widespread protests and unrest across the country. This decision, which was aimed at maintaining public order, was met with mixed reactions. A group of students opposed the cancellation. So, the students initiated further demonstrations on August 21 in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, demanding that the exams be rescheduled rather than canceled.[4] Despite the protests, the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education remained firm in its decision and published the HSC results on October 15, 2024, using a subject mapping method.[5]
Students began their protests regarding the HSC results on October 20, 2024. They stormed the Dhaka Education Board demanding a re-evaluation of the results, which they claimed were unfair and discriminatory. During the protest, students broke tables and chairs in the board office as tensions grew, leading to claims of vandalism against the officials who were there.[6]
Board officials stated that a group of students entered restricted areas and caused significant damage to office property, including the chairman’s office. The chairman of the Dhaka Education Board, Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar, later announced his resignation amid the protests, stating that he would submit his resignation letter to the education minister and address the student's demands. Professor Morjina stated the demands of the agitators are unreasonable and baseless.[7][8]
Demands
[edit]Students protesting the HSC results have made several demands. such as
- Re-evaluation of Results: Students are demanding a thorough re-evaluation of their HSC results, which they believe are unfair. They want their exam papers reviewed through a full "subject mapping" process.
- Cancellation of Results: Many students are calling for the cancellation of the results published on October 15, 2024.

[edit]Officials and employees of the Comilla Education Board organized a human chain to protest against the disruptive and violent behavior of students across various education boards and to demand for a safe working environment from the chief adviser and education adviser.[9]
22 October
[edit]The Mymensingh Education Board officials were locked by the protesting students. The standoff ended peacefully when the students released the officials later in the evening. However, they announced plans to take their protest to the Bangladesh secretariat.[10]
