"25" is a song by American rapper and singer Rod Wave, released on October 11, 2024, as the fourth track from his sixth studio album Last Lap. It was produced by EELmatic and contains a prominent sample of "Love Me JeJe" by Tems.

Background

[edit]

The song's title refers to Green's 25th birthday. It was first previewed by Green himself in July 2024 via his Instagram.[1]

Composition and critical reception

[edit]

Stay Free Radio stated that the song is a "standout track" on the album and that on the track he showcases "a more introspective and vulnerable side". In the song, Green "grapples with feelings of loneliness and disillusionment as he reflects on aging, love, and life" while expressing "a longing for intimacy and escape". Green also expands on social anxiety.[2] HotNewHipHop's Zachary Horvath wrote that "25" sees Green "grapple with a relatable issue that a lot of people his age deal with today" and that "he yearns for that true love given where he's at in his life, and he also wonders to himself whether or not he's ever going to find that".[3]

Music video

[edit]

The official Cam Videos-directed music video sees Green commemorate his late uncle Derek "Dee" Lane. The video features clips from Green's Nostalgia Tour (2023) alongside clips of an unreleased live performance of the track.[3]
