Biography

[edit]

Early life

[edit]

He is the son of Gilles Trapenard, a banker turned horse breeder near Vichy, and Catherine Missoffe, a teacher. He has a sister, Constance, who is a publisher, and two brothers: Thomas, a horse racing trainer, and Vincent, an entrepreneur. Trapenard spent his childhood between Wimbledon, England, and La Celle-Saint-Cloud, in the western suburbs of Paris.[1][2][3][4]

Education and Publications

[edit]

A former student of the Lakanal high school in Sceaux and the École Normale Supérieure of Lyon (2000), Trapenard became an English literature teacher at ENS Lyon from 2006 to 2009.[5] He began a PhD on Emily Brontë's works and the notion of authorship in the Victorian era, spending a year at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2008, he wrote the postscript for the first French edition of Emily Brontë's Devoirs de Bruxelles and published interviews with American author Edmund White in 2009.[6][7]

Cultural journalism

[edit]
[edit]

Trapenard worked briefly as a literary critic for Elle and Le Magazine Littéraire and wrote a column in the America magazine. On the radio, he contributed to shows on Radio Nova and France Culture before producing and hosting literary programs on France Inter, including Boomerang, a daily interview with cultural figures, and reading letters from artists during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.[8][9]

Television

[edit]

He hosted a literary segment on France 24 and later joined Le Grand Journal on Canal+ in 2012. In 2016, he succeeded Daphné Roulier as the host of Le Cercle and launched spin-offs focused on film and television series. He also hosted 21 cm, a monthly literary interview program on Canal+ until January 2021. Trapenard left Canal+ amid tensions following the dismissal of other prominent journalists.[10][11][12]

In May 2021, he launched a new literary show on the BrutX platform called Plumard.[13]

Jury roles

[edit]

Trapenard has served on numerous juries, including the Franz Hessel Prize, the Alexandre-Vialatte Prize, and the Grand Jury of the Angoulême International Comics Festival. In 2024, he became president of the France Télévisions Audience Award at the same festival.[14][15][16][17]

[edit]

Trapenard has received several accolades for his work, including the 2018 Philippe-Caloni Award for best interviewer,[18] the 2019 Grand Prix des Médias CB News for his show Boomerang,[19] and the HeForShe Award from UN Women France in 2019 for his commitment to gender equality.[20][21] In 2020, he was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.[22]
