Ava Brignol, known professionally as Bava or bava_qt, is an American YouTuber, singer and songwriter. She is best known for co-writing DJ Snake's 2018 song "Taki Taki", as well as her song covers and artist impressions on YouTube.

Early life

[edit]

Bava was born in Boston to a Haitian American family. As a child, she fell in love with music. She later attended Harvard University and moved to Los Angeles after graduating to pursue her passion for music.

Career

Music

[edit]

Bava's sound is heavily influenced by her immigrant roots and personal history, taking ample inspiration from Haitian music and what she grew up listening to, whether it's '90s R&B, classic rock or Lady Gaga. So it makes sense that "Itsy Bitsy" is a pop hit that defies genre and labels by combining dramatic strings flourishes with aughts pop and a hint of '80s ballroom flair.[1]

In 2019, Bava found success with the hit single Taki Taki (song). In the song, performed by DJ Snake with Selena Gomez and Cardi B, Bava pays homage her Haitian ancestry with the single's Latin and Caribbean flare and its percussion and drum beats. The song was the first pure Interscope release to go to No. 1 at Latin rhythmic and pop formats, and it achieved multi-format success without assistance from Universal’s Latin arm. [2]

In the United States, "Taki Taki" debuted at number one on the Hot Latin Songs. The song had a strong international impact, reaching the top of the Spotify Global 50 chart where it has stayed for over four weeks.

While Bava's Haitian heritage can be heard throughout her music, a common thread heard in both Taki Taki and Itsy Bitsy, the singer-songwriter has also leaned into personal experiences to inform her music. On the creation of her single "I Wish," Bava explained “I was so drained by a past relationship. I felt like my entire identity was wrapped up in theirs; that when people thought of me, they thought of us. I wanted to express that frustration somehow and headed to the piano to try." [3]

Bava performing with Zedd in 2024
