History

[edit]

The Jewel

[edit]

The station was launched as CJWL by Evanov Communications on February 20, 2006. It had a similar format to co-owned CKDX and CKPC in Southern Ontario, which was branded as The Jewel 98.5 FM. The station was licensed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in 2005.[1]

The CJWL call sign stood for "Jewel" and formerly belonged to Haliburton Broadcasting Group's CFIF in Iroquois Falls.

On October 6, 2009, CJWL received CRTC approval to increase power from 485 watts to 1,100 watts.[2]

Lite 98.5 rebranding

[edit]

In May 2021, Evanov rebranded all Jewel stations to the Lite branding. The company also announced that CKHK-FM Hawkesbury, and CHRC-FM in Clarence-Rockland would drop the soft adult contemporary/pop standards "Jewel" format and flip to a country format.[3]

CJWL wasn't affected by the format changes but was rebranded as Lite 98.5 on May 3, 2021.

Sale to Torres Media

[edit]

On September 5, 2024, Evanov announced that the station, along with CKHK-FM in Hawkesbury and CHRC-FM in Rockland, would close effective September 20, 2024, due to increased competition, changing listener habits, and economic conditions brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic.[4] However, on September 19, Evanov announced that it had reached agreements to sell all three stations, with plans for CJWL to be announced the following week.[5] On September 23, Evanov announced that CJWL would be sold to Torres Media, owner of 101.7 CIDG-FM, pending approval by the CRTC.[6] In November 2024, Torres relaunched the station as MIX 98.5, "Ottawa's Perfect Music Mix", changing its callsign to CITM-FM.
