The Presbyterian Church of Australia was formed in 1901 when various state based Presbyterian Churches federated. Prior to 1977 some congregations left the denomination because of the prevalence of liberal theology in the church. In 1977 many congregations left the Presbyterian Church of Australia and joined the newly formed Uniting Church in Australia, leaving a conservative dominated church.
