Disambiguation category

[edit]

I changed this category to a disambiguation to deter adding new items to it. I also pointed some ambiguous and unnecessary subcategories back to it to close them. This category was re-created in 2009 soon after a CfD mass renaming which was intended to eliminate the confusion of different unrelated geological formations which are all called craters. Let's accept that people will keep re-creating and re-populating it if we leave it open for them. So let's use the disambiguation to point out that craters should be properly categorized under Category:impact craters, Category:volcanic craters or Category:explosion craters. Please help correctly recategorize anything that ends up under this category. Ikluft (talk) 21:19, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Note that use of the {{Category disambiguation}} template requires that the category be empty. Ikluft (talk) 19:29, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
See the draft essay User:Ikluft/essay/Categorization_of_craters (written at invitation of WikiProject Geology and expected to be moved there after initial discussion) which has background on the confusion caused by categories about craters without naming a type of crater.
