Should not go on articles but on articles' talk pages

 – Consensus at WP:CFD is that this belongs on talk pages.

I'd have thought making it a hidden category would make more sense than putting it on a talk page -- just had a bot update Talk:Becky Downie‎ to catsort to the living people subcat, but a place of birth was present at Becky Downie‎; by having the cat on the talk page, an editor not part of WikiProject Biographies might not know to look on the talk page for a category to remove? -- Ratarsed (talk) 21:34, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

How Is This Category Different From A Known Place Of Birth Category?

If one is willing to postulate that everyone was born somewhere and that the place of birth of a person only appears on the article space, why should this category not be on the article space?

This category is merely a case of "People from Foo" but Foo has not yet been identified. All of the tags for "People from Foo" where Foo has been identified are on the article page.

Please do not refer me to the CfD. The discussion ignores the "People from Foo" issue and also ignores what occasionally happens when a place of birth is learned — not only is a category added to the article for Place of birth but also for all the places the person worked, in many cases there is a category for each of the countries and each of the cities within each country.

I see two reasons: That something is missing from an article is a maintenance category, not for readers but foe editors and the second reason is that we don't add this category to all people that the place of birth is missing but only to those we think the place would be important. -- Magioladitis (talk) 23:52, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

The only place that the Place of birth appears is on the article page in as many as three places. Once an editor has changed the lead paragraph, the infobox and the persondata and added the relevant "People from Foo" tag and the reference(s), it is hardly reasonable to expect the editor to go to the talk page to delete a tag.

The description at the top of the category page does not say that the tag is only for persons where the place of birth is important. It merely says

This category (and in its own specific purpose, the analogous Category:Place of death missing) is intended to be placed on the discussion pages of individuals who flourished in historically-recent centuries and whose birthplace has not been indicated in their biographical entry.

There is no mention of importance.

Talk pages

I stumbled across discussions dating back to 2009 (including the above) saying that this and similar categories should be placed on the talk page. However, when I scan through the category list, I can see no articles where this category appears on a talk page. I am also unable to find any recent discussion where it was decided to place these on the main article. I'm confused Periglio (talk) 06:02, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Accuracy

I had one of those epiphany moments when I realised I probably could clear the bulk of this category by just adding the country where the subject was born which would be pretty much obvious from the article anyway. The question really is "What criteria is there for place of birth"? Is a country close enough or are we looking for at least a region of a country, if not a town or village?
