Commend International is an Austrian-based technology provider that specialises in intercom audio/video security systems.[1]

Company history

[edit]

Commend was established in 1971 as a family business providing intercoms for third-party systems. The company soon began to develop its own intercom products based on their credo of making complex technology simple and straightforward to use. Their focus was primarily on audio quality, backward compatibility (product longevity) and interoperability with other systems (e.g., video management systems, physical security management and access control solutions, etc.). A special area of research and inventions is background noise suppression.[2]

Cloud markets

[edit]

Commend products have gone on to embrace progressive intercom technologies, from analogue to digital and on to today's SIP systems and Cloud-based audio/video connectivity. Results of this approach are, e.g., a software-based/virtualised intercom server ("VirtuoSIS") and the build-up of a comprehensive Cloud-native solution platform ("Symphony") (see "Innovations" below). In parallel with this development, Commend stepped up its efforts towards cybersecurity, which they have been promoting as a hallmark feature of their brand.[3]

Products

[edit]
  • In the early 2000s, Commend introduced OpenDuplex® as a further development of full duplex speech transmission technology; this makes for a more natural user experience.[4]
  • In 2012 Commend ventured into virtual server technology with what was billed as the world's first "100% software-based Intercom server", marketed under the name "VirtuoSIS".[5]
  • Since 2019, Commend has been spearheading Cloud-native "Intercom as a service" solutions via its "Symphony" platform.[6]

Projects

[edit]
  • City of Nice (Southern France): large-scale city-wide network of "yellow button" emergency call points; they proved helpful during the 2020 terrorist attack on the city[12]
  • "London Underground": large-scale network of help point terminals at stations[13]
  • Indian Smart Cities: emergency call systems for the country's "Smart Cities Mission" initiative[14][15] (136 emergency call boxes at strategic junctions PAN City)
  • Ospedale Galeazzi Sant'Ambrogio (Gruppo San Donato): extensive communication network for a major hospital/medical & health care centre near Milan, Italy[16][17][18]

Sponsorships

[edit]

For many years, Commend has been actively involved in charity sports events, most notably the annual Charity Challenge and the Salzburg Business Run. The Charity Challenge was initiated by Commend and keeps earning upwards of 40,000 euros in sponsorship money, traditionally for children in need.[19]

Every year they have a different featured artist providing a collection of works for their Commend Art Calendar (e.g. featuring Konrad Winter in 2020[20]).These calendars are printed in limited editions for friends and customers.
