Curtin Mauritius is the Mauritian campus of Curtin University, a public university in Australia.[4] It offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in healthcare, information technology, commerce, design and communications.[5][6] Curtin University is named after John Curtin, a prominent Prime Minister of Australia during World War II from 1941 to 1945, and is the largest university in the state of Western Australia with 58,607 students globally in 2022.[7][8] It is the only Australian university campus in Africa and was formally opened on 3 May 2018 by Pravind Jugnauth, the prime minister of Mauritius.[7][9][10]

Curtin has a partnership with the Toulouse Business School with which it offers dual degree programs with integrated overseas study at Toulouse (France) or Barcelona (Spain).[11] It also offers foundational programs that provide entry into degree programs with credit.[12] Curtin Mauritius is operated in partnership with Charles Telfair Education, which also offers vocational education programs through TAFE Western Australia that can also be used as a pathway into the undergraduate studies.[13]

In Australia, the university is known for having high employer satisfaction rates.[14][15][16] According to the 2022 Employer Satisfaction Survey published by the Australian Government's QILT, the university received the highest overall employer satisfaction (89.7%) among all universities in Australia.[17] The university also ranks within the top 200 universities according to the Quacquarelli Symonds and U.S. News university ranking publications,[18][19] while ranking somewhat lower on others.[20][21][22]

History

[edit]

Curtin University is the modern descendant of the Perth Technical School, established in 1900, which later became the Western Australia Institute of Technology in 1966.[7] The institution received university status in 1986 to form the Curtin University of Technology, named after paramount World War II Prime Minister of Australia John Curtin.[23] In 2010, it removed the suffix from its name and became simply Curtin University.[24] As of 2022, it is the largest university in the state of Western Australia with 58,607 students enrolled across its domestic and overseas campuses.[25]

Curtin University has been present in Mauritius since 2004 through the Charles Telfair Institute that provided study programs for the university.[7] Curtin Mauritius was later established with an initial enrolment of 2,457 students in 2018.[26][27] The campus was formally opened by Pravind Jugnauth, the prime minister of Mauritius, on 3 May 2018 and is the university's fourth overseas campus.[7]

Rankings and reputation

[edit]

Curtin University is a Western Australian university and public perception of the university will differ across the different countries where it has campuses. According to an independent survey by Australian Government's QILT in 2022, employers in Australia were more satisfied with Curtin graduates than any other Australian university.[28] Different university ranking publications use varying methodologies to rank universities[29][30][31][32][33][34] and cannot accurately calculate teaching performance, research quality and other abstract functions into a singular numerical composite.[35] University ranking methodologies have also been subject to scrutiny[36][37][38] for their subjectivity, bias and lack of consideration for institutional specialisations.[39][40][41]

On university ranking publications, Curtin University usually ranks higher than most universities globally and is in the top 1% of universities ranked,[51] Curtin University also specialises in a number of fields, mostly related to engineering, where it ranks high on a number of university subject rankings.

The university also ranks within the top 100 for physical chemistry, public health, energy and fuels, engineering,[60] architecture, business administration, hospitality and tourism management, psychology,[61] nursing, sports science, architecture, pharmacy and pharmacology.[62]

Although the university ranks high in these subjects, the available fields of study at Curtin Mauritius are more limited than at Curtin's main campus in Australia and doesn't include research programs.[5][6] Curtin University uses the same course unit curriculum across all of its global campuses.[63][64]
