Daniweb is an online message board for technologists and computer programmers.[1] Daniweb is also known for its efforts in publishing and formalizing social media etiquette.[2]

History

[edit]

Daniweb was founded in 2002 by Dani Wolkowicki (née Horowitz). Daniweb business networking tool is based on Wolkowicki's algorithm which matches social network users based on their chat behavior.[3]

In 2007, Daniweb community administrator Davey Winder broke the story that TomTom GPS devices came from a factory infected with a virus. A number of news outlets picked up the story and ultimately forced TomTom to admit the faux pas.[4]

In 2008, Google awarded Daniweb with its Enterprise Superstar award.[5]

In 2015, internet security service Have I Been Pwned? reported that Daniweb suffered a data breach that resulted in the disclosure of over 1 million accounts including email and IP addresses.[6][7]

Features

[edit]

The website's main page features a section which highlighs the recent blog entries.[1] Along the left side, it categorizes topics for forum discussions that encompass a wide range of programming languages, such as C, C++, C#, Java, VB.NET, Python, Perl, Assembly, Pascal, Delphi, and Visual Basic 4/5/6.[1] The site also includes forums on computer science, software design, and game development. Additional features include a links directory and an IRC chat network.[1]

Google Panda

[edit]

In 2011, Daniweb was initially cited in an article at Search Engine Land as one of the top 100 domains to suffer losses by the Google Panda algorithm.[8] Other publications such as Search Engine Watch,[9][10] Web Pro News,[11][12] and other outlets published Daniweb's successes and failures within their Google Panda coverage.[13]
