From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artemis Graye Chamberlain (born June 6, 2007), and known professionally as artemis vii, is an American singer/songwriter.

Early life

[edit]

Chamberlain was born on June 6, 2007, in Richmond Heights, Missouri, and was raised in St. John. She is the eldest of three children, and was raised in a musical household. Growing up, her family had two pianos, a guitar, and a drum set. At age 6, she received her first music lessons at her elementary school and became interested in music, primarily guitar. She was raised in a Christian household, and CCM was the family's preferred genre to listen to. She was homeschooled from second grade to third grade, and attended a special-education school from fourth grade to the beginning of eighth grade. Post-COVID, she was homeschooled for all of high school. The family moved from Missouri to Texas when she was 14.

Early music exploration

[edit]

Chamberlain only ever listened to CCM until she was 8 years old. She had been given a radio by her grandfather for Christmas of 2015, by request: "It was the first time I had ever had even a little bit of a choice of what I wanted to listen to. I mean, my dad had, like, maybe a total of seventy songs between two iPods, but that was it," she said.

In 2016, Chamberlain met Venus Da Kid, a St. Louis-based rapper who would eventually become her best friend. The two spent their afternoons in school teaching themselves about music and beat-making. "[Venus] is like my older brother. Like, we couldn't talk for five years, but he's...always been a mentor and an influence," she said in 2022, in a since-deleted interview.

Early career

2016-2017: Early career beginnings as Gryffyn Anders

[edit]

In 2016, Chamberlain began performing at school talent shows under the stage name Gryffyn Anders. Initially, she wanted to become an EDM producer, and her first song she performed was titled "Soul Without Form", an experimental project that blended KMFDM-style synthesizers with Daft Punk vocal effects. It was not well received by her schoolmates, who branded it as "garbage fire level bad".

Chamberlain pivoted and tried her hand at music groups, and she and Venus started the short-lived R&B band Star Edition, which she played bass for. She later revealed that the "bass" was, in fact, a detuned electric guitar. They released one unnamed song on CD, which sold 35 copies and garnered roughly $70 USD. They broke up due to issues over dividing the profits five ways.

2018: as Gryffyn Anderson

[edit]

In 2018, Chamberlain rebranded as Gryffyn Anderson and continued doing R&B solo work. Her unreleased singles "Body" and "Firepit" were recorded on a school iPad and burned as CDs, but the discs were lost in her move to Texas. At this time, she began teaching herself guitar on her father's old guitar, which was missing a string and completely unvarnished. She began writing songs and intended to record some of them, but ultimately "Body" and "Firepit" were the only two she actually managed to record.

Young adult career

2021-2022: as Kito Lebeau

[edit]

In 2021, during COVID, Chamberlain rebranded once again and took on the name Kito Lebeau, her online moniker at the time. During this time, she recorded an EP, titled My Wonderful Holy Golden Boy, which was published to Soundcloud on September 4, 2022. It was deleted two weeks later after a hater stalked her and sent death threats to her regarding lyrical content matter in the title track. Chamberlain has, as of August 2024, talked about re-recording the song at some point. After the stalking incident, which coincided with the suicide of her best friend James "Jax" McIntyre, she decided to take a hiatus from releasing music.

2024-present: as artemis vii

[edit]

In April 2024, Chamberlain changed her stage name to artemis vii. She credits Greek mythology for her name: "The Artemis part comes from my obsession with Percy Jackson. And the Roman numerals are from my birth year. It was just a really easy thing," she explained.

Her debut single as artemis vii, "him (the dogwater version)" was recorded and mixed in 30 minutes using the internal microphone on on her old school Chromebook, her family's acoustic guitar, and a free online DAW software. It was released July 9, 2024, the same day it was written and recorded. Chamberlain says that she dislikes the single immensely, and considers it her "worst song, even worse than Soul Without Form, which is saying something."

Her second single, "tower of vultures", released July 20, 2024, was written as a tribute to McIntyre. Chamberlain regards it as her best and most favorite song she has ever written. Her third single, "valhalla", was released on August 3, 2024. She also released a demo of her song "insecure" on August 19, 2024, and plans to release the full version in October 2024.
