Christopher "Chris" Guzman is a USA-based professional artist known for painting Pop Art images of famous boxers and celebrities and also has been a fine arts instructor since 1998. He has been known as "The Boxing Glove Artist" worldwide since 2009.
Background Christopher Ross Guzman was born on July 21, 1975 in Gary, Indiana to parents John M. Guzman and Patricia K. (Murray) Guzman. He has two brothers, Gregory A. Guzman and John P. Guzman. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Hobart, Indiana where Chris was raised.
Guzman presently lives in Valparaiso, Indiana with his wife Angela.
Education Chris attended Liberty Elementary in Hobart, Hobart Middle School, and graduated from Hobart High School in 1993. Chris then studied Advertising Design and Graphic Design at The American Academy of Art in Chicago, IL and received his Associate's degree in 1995. Upon graduation he enrolled at Calumet College of Saint Joseph's in Hammond, Indiana and graduated in 1998 with a BA in Media/Fine Arts with a minor in Secondary Education with a K-12 endorsement.
Boxing Art Career Chris has painted portraits on hundreds of boxing gloves over the years, the majority of which are autographed by the subjects, prompting him being dubbed "The Boxing Glove Artist" by the President of the Bare Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame, Mr. Scott Burt in 2009. That same year, Guzman was named the Official Artist for the BKBHOF in Belfast, NY. Additionally, Guzman was named an Honorary Inductee of the BKBHOF in 2017. Many fighters and celebrities own "Guzman Gloves" in their personal collections, including Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Manny Pacquiao, Roy Jones Jr, Sugar Ray Leonard, Slash, Drew Barrymore, Mike Ditka, and many, many more.
In 2019, Guzman was named "Feature Artist" for the Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame by the organization's President, Mr. Ray McCline. Together with the Hall's Official Artist, Mr. Patrick Killian, these two artists commemorate each Hall of Fame inductee with a hand-painted portrait on canvas (Killian) or on a glove (Guzman).
Gallery Affiliation Guzman shows his work regularly in several Chicagoland art galleries, including Gallery 659 (Whiting, IN) and Paul Henry's (Hammond, IN).
Education Career Guzman first started teaching Fine Arts at Andrean High School in Merrillville, IN during the 1997-1998 school year. He then transferred to Gary Public Schools in 2002 where taught Fine Arts for 18 years, including assignments at Brunswick, Vohr, Riley, Beveridge, Franklin, Glen Park Academy, and Williams elementary schools. In 2020, he transferred to Kahler Middle School in Dyer, IN where he presently teaches Visual Arts for grades 5-8.
