FreePBX is a web-based open-source graphical user interface (GUI) that manages Asterisk, a voice over IP (VoIP) and telephony server.[1]. It was first released as the Asterisk Management Portal (AMP) 1.10.002 on October 15, 2004. AMP was later renamed to freePBX (later FreePBX) on the release of version 2.0 on March 17, 2006[2].

The latest release is FreePBX 16, released on October 31, 2021[3]

FreePBX maintain the currently released version and the previous release behind this.[4][5] When a new version is released, the oldest supported version becomes end of life at the same time.

With the FreePBX interface, you can configure and manage many aspects of an Asterisk system without touching a single configuration file. While we purists may like everyone to work only with the config files, we recognize that for many, learning Linux and editing these files by hand is simply not going to happen. For those folks, there is FreePBX, and it has our respect for the important contributions it has made to the success of Asterisk.
