Background
[edit]Yazmeen Williams was a 31-year-old recent college graduate who grew up in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. Before her death, Williams had recently received a degree in criminal justice from Buffalo State University, and she was set to begin a job with the city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development.[1] Williams was last seen alive on June 30, 2024, when she was recorded on video throwing out trash in the building she lived.[2] On July 5th, 2024, after police responded to reports of a suspicious garbage bag emitting a foul odor on East 27th Street between Second and Third avenues, Williams was found dead in a garbage bag. The bag concealed a sleeping bag, which contained her corpse, and it was discovered on the sidewalk after it was left out for trash pickup. The medical examiner determined that she had been shot in the head, and her death was ruled a homicide.[3]
A suspect is in custody and has been charged with murder and concealment of a human corpse. On June 26, 2024, surveillance video allegedly captured an argument between Williams and the suspect in their apartment building hallway, during which the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot her.[4] Surveillance footage from after Williams was last seen allegedly showed the suspect dragging the sleeping bag that Williams' body was discovered inside of on a dolly.[5] The suspect, who has a lengthy criminal record including multiple felony convictions, was paroled in 2022 after serving time for robbery. He was allegedly known to have a volatile relationship with Williams.[6] He was arraigned and remains in custody awaiting trial.[7]
Public response
[edit]A vigil was held in Williams' honor on July 13, 2024, at the site where her body was found. Family and friends gathered to remember Williams and call for justice.[3][7]
